RELATED: Big 12 2017 class updates

Conference rank: T6

National rank: T56

Headliner: Four-star quarterback Sam Ehlinger

Overview: Texas fans aren’t worried, not the way Charlie Strong closed the 2016 class, especially in the state of Texas, but it is always odd to see the Longhorns ranked so low after years of Mack Brown’s early classes. Ehlinger, who is a stat-stuffer that can do things with his feet as well as his arm, has tremendous leadership skills and a maturity that belies his age. Wide receiver Damion Miller will be a big target for him down the line. Defensive end LaGaryonn Carson is a physical freak and could play early, while the defensive back trio of Josh Thompson, Montrell Estell and Kobe Boyce is very solid. This class will be defined by who Strong finishes with, but the early core here is very good.
