TEAMS WITH THE TOP COMMITS: Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Florida State

There are not a ton of quarterbacks committed this early but there are some significant ones as teams try to build out their 2023 recruiting classes as well. None is more important than five-star Malachi Nelson to Oklahoma.

The Los Alamitos, Calif., quarterback was high on USC over the last few months but after the Trojans offered another player at that position – and with the Sooners recruiting him hard as well – Nelson committed to Oklahoma. He’s a perfect fit for what coach Lincoln Riley does on offense. He could easily follow in the line of Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Spencer Rattler and possibly Caleb Williams in Norman.

The commitment of Eli Holstein to Texas A&M should not be overlooked. The four-star quarterback from Zachary, La., proved at the Rivals Camp in Dallas among many other events that he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the 2023 class and he has long been interested in playing for coach Jimbo Fisher. It could be a match made in heaven since Fisher coaches the position so well and Holstein is so talented.

Florida State has also landed an early quarterback pledge in 2023 from four-star Chris Parson from Brentwood (Tenn.) Ravenwood. While he’s not as polished or prolific as the two others mentioned above, Parson is a nice addition for coach Mike Norvell and his staff to start getting focused on more 2023 pledges at the skill positions.

PROSPECT ON THE RISE

Even though Pierce Clarkson splits time with Michigan State commit Katin Houser at powerhouse Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco, he’s still climbing up the rankings because of a great offseason and the projection that he’s going to be even more special in the coming years.

With more than 20 offers, Clarkson spent the summer traveling and seeing programs such as Wake Forest, Duke, NC State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Indiana and Louisville on road trips and UCLA and others are showing interest closer to home.

He has an accurate arm, he can zip it and Clarkson can also get out and throw on the run. In his sophomore season, the 2023 standout also showed the ability to escape pressure and pick up yards with his feet. Once given the reins of the Bosco offense, Clarkson should show out even more and could see his recruitment pick up even faster.

PROSPECT TO WATCH

Arch Manning is the No. 1 prospect in the 2023 class and he remains uncommitted but we’ve written so much about him in recent days it’s time to focus on two other quarterbacks: Detroit (Mich.) Martin Luther King’s Dante Moore and Downey (Calif.) Warren’s Nico Iamaleava.

Moore is not naming a group of favorites just yet but it looks like Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame are battling it out for him. As for Iamaleava, who’s also a star volleyball player, USC could be the front-runner for him but he’s also a national recruit. Both Moore and Iamaleava are four-star recruits ranked third and fourth respectively at the pro-style quarterback spot. That might be the ceiling right now but both are incredibly talented.
