3. Malik McDowell, Michigan State

4. Caleb Brantley, Florida

5. Chris Wormley, Michigan

WHY ALLEN IS NO. 1

While Allen isn’t a pure defensive tackle, he’s considered by NFL standards to be either three technique in a 4-3 defense or a five technique in a 3-4, and isn’t your classic edge rusher at nearly 300 pounds. Allen lacks the natural length of a pure outside pass rusher but is so good with his hands and feet that he can defeat blockers outside. However, his strength is off of contact, which is why he’s scheme versatile and so highly coveted in this draft. And with a lack of depth at defensive tackle in the 2017 NFL Draft, it makes him all the more valuable this year.

Adams is more of a natural defensive tackle and it’s absurd to me that most don’t have him with a first-round grade. Yes, the NFL wants guys who can not only push the pocket but can flush and chase the quarterback. Adams is solid but not spectacular at the latter, but he brings the total package and to me isn’t far off Allen at all.

The dropoff begins at McDowell, who is athletic but you have to question his desire and motor. Brantley is a point-of-attack guy who won’t chase but will hold the line. His recent off-field trouble could cause him to slide as well. Wormley is in the McDowell/Brantley range in round two although he’s a bit better in pursuit.

It’s a weak draft at one of the most coveted positions in the NFL, yet there isn’t a lot of talk of more than one tackle being taken. I simply can’t believe Allen will be the only guy in round one.
