Three teams stepping up in 3-Star APB Craig Williams' recruitment

One of the most dynamic playmakers in the Houston area, Crosby’s Craig Williams, is going to give some team a plug-and-play offensive weapon, but three teams in particular are putting in extra effort to gain his favor.

Houston, Missouri, and Utah have been at the forefront of a crowded group of teams that have offered to this point, and although those three provide him with some variety to choose from, all could conceivably be a very nice fit for what he brings to the table.

Williams, also known as Sqwirl, has a reputation that extends beyond the football field as one of the state’s top track athletes as well. As strong as all three of those offenses proved to be last season, Williams’ speed and prowess as a pass catcher is a combination that any in that trio would be happy to add.

Being close to Houston’s campus certainly works in the Cougars favor - and having a sibling attending school there is perhaps an added bonus - and Williams made his most recent unofficial visit to U of H three weeks ago. He also has a visit scheduled to Utah on April 15 for the Utes’ spring game. While he doesn’t have a date scheduled to make it up to Missouri, right now, he’s eyeing sometime in early June.

IN HIS WORDS

On Houston

“It’s a hometown thing but they also have a coach there that came from another college that had offered me and we’ve been building a bond,” he said. “I like Houston, my sister is going there, they have nice facilities, and the new coaching staff is really great and they’re doing a couple new things, and I think I fit in that program pretty good.”

“They’re not really going to be changing the scheme, just doing a couple new things,” he said. “They told me they are putting in a little more spread, maybe running the option a little bit more. They want to play fast, that’s what they were telling me, so I think I am a perfect fit.”

On Missouri

“They’ve been recruiting me real hard, they’re probably the first ones that have been recruiting me this hard,” he said. “They’re really far away, so that’s going to be a big decision if I decide to go there and because it’s an out-of-state school. But it’s a great school and they’re recruiting me really hard and I like that.”

“I know they pass the ball quite a bit, but I know that they had a 1,000-yard rusher [Damarea Crockett] too, so they mix it up quite a bit,” he said. “They like to air it out, but I at the same time they like to give it to the running back to go get those yards.”

On Utah

“I had a couple of friends go up there and they told me it was really nice there,” he said. “They’re a really great school and they’ve been recruiting me hard, I like their offense and they like to run the ball too, they get their running back out in the slot and get the ball out in the open field and make some moves.”

“I’ve gotten more familiar with them,” he said. “Me and the coaches talk almost every day, every weekend, it’s a great school and I think I’m really liking it.”

RIVALS REACTION

As far as all-purpose backs go, Williams is basically what comes to mind, although his numbers from last season don't necessarily reflect the big-play potential that he brings on every rep.

As far as the three teams discussed, he has a pretty clear idea about the relationships he has with the coaches that have been recruiting him and what sort of role he would have with each offense. He said that he’s not thinking about making a commitment until National Signing Day, and with all the offers that he has, a number of others could perhaps move up the ladder with him in the coming months.
