Prospects in the class of 2023 are getting a late start with the elimination of the spring evaluation period and cancellation of off-season camps, but some are starting to emerge with their freshman years coming to an end. Here are nine from the Southeast region who are soon-to-be household names in college football recruiting.
JUSTIN BENTON
Benton is a beast. It is that simple. He is a very physical and disruptive defensive lineman that has a motor that doesn’t stop. He is advanced for his age with moves off the ball, how he works his hands and the ability to shed blocks.
Benton holds offers from Florida, Florida State, Georgia, West Virginia and others. The only question about Benton is future position. He could end up as an edge rusher, outside linebacker, defensive end or even quick defensive tackle. His father Phillip Benton played at Georgia.
JALEN BROWN
Brown would be top wideout in a lot of other states. And while he doesn’t get the same pub as Brandon Inniss, his talent level isn’t that far behind. Brown began picking up major offers last year and had an impressive season for Miami’s Gulliver Preparatory High School. The speedy and instinctive Brown needs to add some weight in the year ahead but that should take care of itself. He runs incredibly crisp routes for such a young wideout.
STANQUON CLARK
Clark’s recruitment began to blow up this offseason, before the Covid-19 crisis shut down the camp circuit. He picked up an offer from LSU during a trip to Baton Rouge in February and is starting to look like one of the top safeties in the 2023 class. Clark, who attends Miami Killian High School, breaks on the ball incredibly well and shows off impressive tackling on film. He has already developed a reputation as a big hitter and could be in for a massive sophomore season.
KELBY COLLINS
Collins is a long defensive end with the frame coaches covet. With that length and size, he has good quickness of the ball, he has that bend to get around the edge and he is only going to get better.
Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, South Carolina and others have already offered Collins. He finished with over 60 tackles as a freshman and expectations are high this season as a sophomore. The class of 2023 in Alabama looks strong and he will be one of the best.
KELDRIC FAULK
Faulk is an athlete that could project at a couple of different positions in college this far out. He is more of a hybrid at this stage, and looks like a future stand-up linebacker on the next level. For his size, he is very fluid, agile and rangy. Faulk has shown great ability to rush the quarterback, chase the ball and beat offensive linemen off the ball. He has a lot of room to grow, so he is one that will be fun to track.
Alabama, Florida, LSU, Michigan and Tennessee have already offered.
CEDRICK HAWKINS
An unbelievably physical and strong corner, Hawkins has proven he can cover elite wideouts that are oftentimes more advanced in age. He showed progress in coverage at this year’s Rivals Camp stop in Orlando, where he was in the mix for MVP honors. He has the look of a player that could become special as his technique continues to catch up with his size and athleticism. He already has a handful of major offers and more are on the way.
BRANDON INNISS
Innis burst onto the radar as an eighth-grader, when he was the most impressive prospect of any age at Florida State’s prospect camp. Major offers weren’t far behind that performance, as he began to rack them up at an impressive rate last season. Inniss is the most notable 2023 player in the state of Florida and has five-star tools. The South Ft. Lauderdale-based star has grown a few inches over the last year and now has solid size to go along with his explosiveness and reliable hands. If he continues at his current trajectory and avoids major injury, he will press to become the No. 1 player in the state when 2023 rankings are released.
LEBBEUS OVERTON
Overton is a freak athlete for his size and his age. He not only is a standout on the football field, but he is drawing early attention in basketball too. As a defensive end, he is very explosive and disruptive. He moved to Georgia from Alabama over the holiday break, and he will make a big impact at Milton High this season.
Offers from Florida, Georgia and Mississippi State have already arrived. He is very low-key on social media, and he is not too big on self-promoting, but on the field he makes a lot of noise and is the center of attention.
PETER WOODS
Woods is a bigger defensive end for his age, and he is likely going to be a five-technique or three-technique in college. He is already over 250 pounds, he is very strong at the point of attack and he is sneaky quick off the ball. He made a big impact as a freshman to help Thompson win the state title last season.
The offers from who’s who in college football are already in for Woods: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame, Penn State and others have offers. He is on track to be one of the top defensive linemen in 2023.
