COPPELL, Tex. -- Four-star defensive athlete Anfernee Orji has been long been the focus of a number of team’s recruiting efforts, but now he is the one that wants to zero-in on some finalists.
The bigger mystery is who will make up that shortlist. Orji said that he plans on making some official visits in the coming weeks, but wasn’t committal on who might be in the running to land those. He said that he expects to be able to take two or three before the spring window to take them closes.
“I’d like to commit before my senior season at the latest,” he said. “Probably after spring ball, in the summer, sometime in there.”
Two of the teams that might sneak into that group in the coming weeks are Colorado and Minnesota. The Buffaloes haven’t been shy about recruiting the extended Dallas area, but if they plan to stand a chance a significant chance with Orji, the staff will likely need to convince him to take one of those potential visits to Boulder.
“It’s far, so that’s going to be a tough drive or flight,” he said. “I’m going to have to talk to my parents before I actually make a decision about going out there.”
Otherwise, Orji said that Baylor - where he recently visited - is leading the charge in his recruitment along with Minnesota in terms of teams that have been working to win his favor as of late. Vanderbilt, where his brother, Rivals250 linebacker Alston Orji signed with out of the 2018 class, could be a contender as well with the familial connection.
