DeMarcco Hellams recaps B1G, ACC trips

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Shortly after Sunday’s Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by adidas, Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha 2019 wide receiver DeMarcco Hellams added offers from Purdue and Wisconsin. Before the camp, though, the four-star recapped recent visits to Clemson, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State.

Hellams visited the Michigan schools most recently, seeing the Spartans and Wolverines back-to-back in mid-April.

“I got to talk to Coach (Ron) Burton (at Michigan State) about just how they value their players, and not just their skill set,” Hellams said.

“(Michigan) really met my expectations. I got a chance to break down film with Coach (Don) Brown. He told me a lot about how they could use me in that system.”

The 6-foot-1, 204-pound Hellams worked out at wide receiver during Sunday’s camp, but is also being looked at on the defensive side of the football by some schools.

“Most of the schools I talk to, they really (give) me the option of if I want to play offense or defense,” Hellams said. “Some schools want me to play both.”

When Hellams visited Clemson in early March he spent individual time with coaches on each side of the football.

“I got a chance to talk to Coach (Jeff) Scott and talk to Coach (Mike) Reed and we just talked about how they have more to offer than just their facilities,” Hellams said. “They have good players and good coaches around there. There is just something about Clemson. They are winners.”

The trip to Penn State two months ago was the most recent of three recruiting visits Hellams has taken to see the Nittany Lions.

“I have a really good vibe up there,” Hellams said. “I talk to Coach (Tim) Banks every week and I talk to Coach (James) Franklin a lot.”

More than a dozen schools now populate Hellams’ offer list, but with nearly two years until he has to sign a letter of intent there is no rush from the Rivals100 prospect to render a college decision.

“Right now I am just taking the recruiting process slow,” he said. “Probably around this time next year I’ll have (favorites). As of right now I just put everybody at the same level.”
