SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Practices for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl continued Tuesday and the second session featured a number of standout performances. Here is a look at who excelled and who stumbled for the West team at Blossom Athletic Center.
STOCK UP
1. WR Michael Pittman, Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian
Recruiting wrap: Pittman has already signed midyear enrollment paperwork with USC.
Performance: The 6-foot-4, 205-pound wideout was explosive in receiving drills, making catches in stride before turning up field with a full head of steam. He was a tough cover for the secondary -- on one play, Pittman beat a corner down the sideline and made an over-the-shoulder catch for a touchdown. The future Trojan also made some great catches in traffic before exiting practice with an injury.
2. WR Tyler Vaughns, La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat
Recruiting wrap: Vaughns, who is committed to USC, is set to visit the Trojans the weekend of Jan. 15 and intends to head to Alabama for an official visit the week after that.
Performance: There was not a receiver that looked as smooth as Vaughns, who was a favorite target for the West quarterbacks. He always looks to be in control and has a great feel for running routes, but he also finishes plays by making tremendous grabs. Vaughns created plenty of problems for safeties over the top, too.
3. LB Mique Juarez, Torrance (Calif.) North
Recruiting wrap: Juarez is down to Ole Miss and UCLA.
Performance: The five-star linebacker was a nuisance manning the inside spot. He chased down ball carriers in run support but also disrupted various screen plays, using his speed and instincts to beat blocks. Juarez, who scored 60 total touchdowns this past season, also got several carries at running back, a position he could try at the next level.
4. QB Shea Patterson, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy
Recruiting Wrap: Patterson will enroll early at Ole Miss
Performance: Patterson’s quick release, accuracy and live arm were hard to miss once again on the second day of Army practice. He was the top quarterback performer in a solid group. His ball jumped out of his hand and was well placed throughout the day. He also has a great ability to deliver with accuracy and velocity on the run.
5. ATH Chase Lucas, Chandler, Ariz.
Recruiting wrap: Lucas has committed to Arizona State.
Performance: The four-star prospect had a very nice pass break up on a deep pass down the sideline, going up to knock away what would have been a sure touchdown. For a player that spent a lot of his time on the offensive side of the ball in high school, Lucas looks like a natural defensive back. From the safety position, Lucas was active, read plays well and showed great range to get where he needed to be after the snap.
6. OL Tramonda Moore, Oklahoma City (Okla.) John Marshall
Recruiting Wrap: Oklahoma leads for Moore. Oklahoma State and Alabama round out his top three.
Performance: It was another good day for Moore. The big offensive tackle is one of the most physical linemen in the trenches. His overall strength and quick feet make him a tough match-up for opposing defensive linemen. He drove defenders off the ball with authority and finished strong.
7. TE Devin Asiasi, Concord (Calif.) De La Salle
Recruiting wrap: Asiasi has visited UCLA and has trips lined up with Washington (Jan. 15), Alabama (Jan. 22) and USC (Jan. 29) before National Signing Day.
Performance: For as big as he is, Asiasi moves incredibly well down field and looks fluid through his breaks. The 6-foot-5, 253-pound prospect has gotten looks at defensive end but he would be more than capable of lining up at tight end. Asiasi has soft hands and, despite his size, finds a way to get open against linebackers.
8. RB Melquise Stovall, Lancaster (Calif.) Paraclete
Recruiting Wrap: Stovall is a Cal Golden Bear commitment
Performance: Stovall has a smallish, stocky build, and he gives defenders a small target. He was patient as he let blocks develop and made defenders miss with his quick change of direction. He is a versatile threat and showed an explosive burst on day two of practice.
9. CB David Long, Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola
Recruiting Wrap: Washington leads for Long with Notre Dame, Michigan, USC, and UCLA also in the running.
Performance: Long has nice size and has already put together a good week in San Antonio. On Tuesday, he jumped a comeback route and knocked away the ball. He was disciplined in his back pedal, with good footwork, balance, and a quick change of direction.
10. DE Josh King, Darien (Ill.) Hinsdale South
Recruiting Wrap: King is committed to Michigan State.
Performance: King has tremendous length at 6-foot-6, 230-pounds, and he gets off the ball low and quick. He uses his length well to get in passing lanes when he was not getting pressure in the backfield. He has a strong motor and he was a consistent presence off the edge.
STOCK DOWN
1. OL Cole Van Lanen, Green Bay (Wisc.) Bay Port
Recruiting Wrap: Van Lanen is solidly committed to the Wisconsin Badgers.
Performance: Van Lanen had a tough day on the second day of practice. Defensive linemen were able to get him on his heels and get into the backfield. He did have a nice combo block with Moore, but he also had some trouble handling quicker guys.
2. OL Frank Martin, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei
Recruiting Wrap: Martin is committed to USC
Performance: Another day, another tough outing for Martin. Once he gets his hands on his guy he does a good job of driving them out, but at tackle he had trouble facing quicker defensive ends. He worked on the right and left side of the line and both proved to be tough for him to handle.
3. LB Camilo Eifler, Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O’Dowd
Recruiting wrap: Eifler is committed to Washington.
Performance: The four-star linebacker had some trouble keeping up with receivers in space, getting caught on a couple play-action calls and failing to recover in time. He struggled to keep tight ends in front of him and, on one run play, lost contain and allowed a running back to break free.
4. WR Trevon Sidney, La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat
Recruiting wrap: Sidney has committed to USC, but told Rivals.com this week he wants to visit Washington, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Arizona before National Signing Day.
Performance: It might be difficult to gauge how healthy Sidney was Tuesday given a nagging ankle injury, but the four-star prospect didn’t live up to expectations. He has very good hands but at times gets enamored with making the catch look more spectacular than just hauling it in. Sidney didn’t seem to find his rhythm.
5. WR Javon McKinley, Corona (Calif.) Centennial
Recruiting wrap: McKinley is set to announce a commitment Saturday between Notre Dame, Oregon and Washington.
Performance: The four-star wide receiver took a step back from his strong showing in the opening session. He looked slower than usual and not as explosive out of his breaks. McKinley, one of the better possession receivers in the region, had a couple catches but failed to create separation on a consistent basis.
