That appeared to be the case with Tyler Boyd, who for weeks had said he would make his pledge during Saturday's game in San Antonio.
Now he's not so sure. He might take some visits.
If not, he isn't being mysterious about which school he'd pick.
"More than likely it would be Pittsburgh because I feel very comfortable there," said the Pittsburgh (Pa.) Clairton receiver. "My boy, Titus Howard is going there and my relationship with Coach Engram is just so great. Coming into a program like that where I can play and, maybe, start as a freshman. If I went somewhere else I may not play as a freshman and I may not feel as comfortable."
The big news lately in Pittsburgh is the commitment of Robert Foster to Alabama.
"Everyone was a little caught off guard because he was saying he was going to go to Pitt," he said. "People were a little upset because he wasn't showing much loyalty but he has to do about what's best for him."
As for Boyd, he has his list to visit.
"I was trying to get an official to Arizona with Thomas Woodson because I would have been comfortable there with him," Boyd said. "He isn't going there anymore so that won't happen.
"I love Coach London and Coach Hixon at Penn State," Boyd said. "They're really cool and laid back. They have a very strong recruiting class and I played with Christian Hackenberg down at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge and we crushed it. The only thing I don't like about Penn State is that I won't be able to play in a bowl game.
"Another great quarterback-wide receiver connection I have is with Damion Terry at Michigan State," he said. "They're all talking about me coming there and starting as a freshman.
"West Virginia is still in the top three," Boyd said. "They were a little upset about how I couldn't make it down there for the official visit but I was really banged up from my game. It's another great quarterback connection I have with Chavas Rawlins but their defense is a little iffy.
"Tennessee is coming after me pretty hard," he said. "The coaches down at Cincinnati were coming after me pretty hard also, but that wasn't a school I was really interested in. But Tennessee is a school I'm really trying get down to and get to know. I'm trying to build a strong relationship with Coach Mahoney.
"Rutgers has probably come through the school and talked to me the most, that's how I know they want me and want me start," Boyd said. "The downfall with them is that is that I'd go into that program feeling like a stranger. Meeting new people isn't a big deal to me but I just want to go somewhere that I'm comfortable."
If Boyd doesn't announce, he has a backup plan.
"If I don't commit I'm probably going to take some officials and narrow it down and make a decision around the end of January," Boyd said.
