Big 12 breakdown: Surprising non-offers

RELATED: ACC | Big Ten | SEC | Pac-12

The end of July is a popular time for recruits to look to make commitments before preseason camp starts with their high school teams. Surprisingly, there are a few players throughout Big 12 country that have been overlooked to this point by seemingly obvious corresponding programs. Here’s a quick look at players that should be given a second - or first - look by a few teams headed into the fall.

Stephen Zabie: Texas

This seems a no-brainer as Zabié already has upward of 20 offers, including Oklahoma, Florida, LSU, USC and others. He plays with Texas quarterback commit Sam Ehlinger and target Levi Jones at Westlake High School in Austin. The Longhorns may be looking to go leaner and quicker with their linemen as they try to up the pace of their offense, but Zabié’s strength and potential make him a unique prospect that they would have an easy time working between proximity and Ehlinger’s connection.

Octavius Evans: Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State

Evans has kept a low-profile recruitment thus far and hasn’t been as frequent a face on the camp scene during the offseason. He’s a thicker wide receiver that plays in a more remote locale, but holds offers from Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. Mississippi State is the only other one of his offers that is on that sort of level, so there is an opportunity for Kansas, Kansas State or Iowa State to immediately make him the top player in their class, or for Baylor to jump back into recruiting with a splash commitment.

Jaylen Gipson: Baylor, Kansas

The Bears are essentially starting from scratch in recruiting this class and they certainly need a quarterback to help kick-start things. Texas Tech and Colorado State are the big fish involved with Gipson's recruitment at the moment, but Baylor could offer the three-star standout the opportunity to be the only quarterback taken in this class. For all of Kansas’ recruiting efforts in Texas, the Jayhawks are yet to receive a commitment from a quarterback and haven’t offered one of the top remaining Lone Star State passers.

Zacchaeus McKinney: Texas Tech, TCU

Getting better on the interior of the defensive line is a major priority for the Red Raiders. The transfer of Ondre Pipkins could be a big help in addressing that in the short term, but his health is a concern and there isn’t a lot of inspiring other options in the middle behind him. TCU would stand to go straight to the front of the line as a top program that’s also very close to home. McKinney only has six offers, with Houston and Oklahoma State as his likely top two options, so there is plenty of room for Tech and TCU to get involved should they so choose.

Djimon Colbert - Kansas State

Bill Snyder has done pretty well recruiting the state, but Colbert is one of its highest-ranked players in 2017 and he has yet to receive an offer from the Wildcats. K-State has other defensive back targets that it is still working on, but schools usually look to win the recruiting war in their own state first. Colbert is committed to Iowa, which has been extremely effective recruiting this year, but a recruit can’t flip if he isn’t offered. He would immediately be one of the best players in Kansas State’s class - which is still without a commitment from a defensive back.

Devodrick Johnson - Oklahoma

Johnson was a relative unknown heading into the spring, but saw his recruitment explode en route to his Texas A&M commitment last week. Johnson’s brother, Antoine Stephens, plays for the Sooners. Devodrick had been considering Oklahoma State for the chance to play against Antoine in a big game once a year, among other reasons. His commitment to A&M seems a strong one, so if there is one team that has a strong chance to pull him away it might only be a top-tier program with a family connection.
