West Region breakdown: Surprise non-offers

RELATED: ACC | Big 12 | Big Ten | SEC

All five of these West prospects have impressive offer lists but many top programs decided to not offer for one reason or another. Some of those are head-scratchers and could be misses down the road because all of these recruits have proven to be phenomenal talents. Here is a look at five players who could have great college careers and some teams might regret not offering.

Jamire Calvin

Surprise non-offer(s): UCLA, USC

Comments: Calvin is a speedy receiver who is difficult to defend in one-on-one situations because he can break away from cornerbacks on the outside and he can make people miss when he lines up in the slot. The four-star prospect is undersized, there’s no getting around that, and it could be one reason why UCLA and USC among other Pac-12 powerhouses decided not to offer but those programs could be missing out. In any sort of spread offense, Calvin can do impressive things. Just get him the ball, send some blockers out to help him down the field and he can put together some big gains. Or Calvin can break deep and stretch the field that way.

Elijah Molden

Surprise non-offer(s): Florida State, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame

Comments: Molden never loaded up on offers from across the country but he didn’t need them as Oregon, Stanford, Washington and USC always seemed to stand out a little more in his recruitment. Still, more schools should have extended an offer because the four-star is an intelligent, savvy player who should be a physical, lockdown defensive back in college. He also comes from good stock since his dad, Alex, played for the Ducks and Molden is a coachable, smart player who always seems to be in the right position. Did more national programs just not venture up to the Pacific Northwest to check him out? Did the coaches feel he wouldn’t leave the Pac-12? Whatever the reason, Molden is a tremendous player who should make one college program really pleased.

Alex Perry

Surprise non-offer(s): Oregon, UCLA, USC, Washington

Comments: Perry has a bunch of major offers but he should have even more especially in the Pac-12, from schools like Washington, Oregon, UCLA and USC. He’s one of the top defenders on a loaded Las Vegas Bishop Gorman team so daily competition is not an issue at all – and Perry has more than held his own. The four-star has fantastic feet, he flips his hips and runs with receivers with no problem and he’s excellent breaking on the ball and poking the pass away. Perry has a lot of great options but it seems like some schools have slow-played him through the offseason. That might not be the best decision because the kid can play.

Isaiah Pola-Moa

Surprise non-offer(s): Oregon, UCLA, Texas A&M

Comments: Pola-Mao is one of the more physically impressive prospects in the West because of his length and versatility. The four-star prospect can shine at wide receiver or move to safety (possibly outside linebacker down the road) and have a real impact on the game. He was super impressive at the Pylon 7v7 in Las Vegas this spring but really hasn’t seen his recruitment explode in the summer months. With his size, length, versatility and athleticism, more Pac-12 and national programs should be interested in him. Whether on offense or defense, Pola-Mao is a major contributor and could see his recruitment get really busy through the fall.

Bryan Thompson

Surprise non-offer(s): Oklahoma, Oregon, UCLA, USC

Comments: It’s puzzling why Thompson has not landed many more offers from big-time programs in the Pac-12 and also more nationally. The four-star receiver is very open to leaving the West, which should mean more offers could be coming if he starts off his senior season in a big way. Thompson has excellent size, long arms, great hands; he’s smooth and fast on the outside. The four-star is a major competitor who takes to coaching. Some team is going to land a big-time player in Thompson and others are going to regret not offering. He was fantastic at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge Presented by Under Armour among other events this offseason.
