Barnes talks public perception, upcoming Ohio State visit

OVIDO, Fla. – Williams Barnes isn’t naming leaders. The Rivals100 offensive lineman knows that won’t stop people from drawing conclusion, though. So while he’ll tell anyone that listens that he isn’t a heavy Florida lean, he knows the perception is out there.

But the chatter that links him to the Gators is not something to which the Apopka (Fla.) High School offensive lineman is deaf. He knows that the outside world has decided UF is his leader.

“That’s what everyone says,” Barnes said with a laugh. “People say a lot of things, though. They don’t really know what’s going on with you. It’s not something that’s official. Florida is just a place that I’m definitely considering – I’m considering it with these other schools.”

Barnes offers up his own words when asked to name the major players in his recruitment. He chooses them carefully. But, as expected, the Gators are heavily involved in his response.

“I don’t really have leaders, but I do talk to Florida and North Carolina a lot,” he said. “Also, Auburn. I talk to them a lot. Florida State and Ohio State talk a lot, too.”

Barnes will take dozens of extra looks around before settling on a college. He has a handful of trips on his agenda including a visit to Ohio State on April 8.

“I talk to the coaching staff a lot, so everything I know about Ohio State, I know from them. Coach Alford. I talk to him a lot. He’s a great coach. I watch the way he coaches the team. I’m excited to meet the offensive line coach.”

IN HIS WORDS: “I don’t know on [a commitment timetable]. I think I’m just going to let this thing ride out until at least my season starts.”

RIVALS REACTION: Barnes has family ties to North Carolina. The Tar Heels and Buckeyes will both be players in his recruitment, but Florida might be tough to edge out here. If the Gators have a poor season this fall, Barnes could slip away. Otherwise, he seems to be a UF lean despite what he suggests.
