Ask Farrell: Will all-star games shake up WR rankings?

The top of the wide receiver rankings look like this: Ohio State signee Julian Fleming followed by Maryland’s Rakim Jarrett, Notre Dame’s Jordan Johnson, Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Texas A&M’s Demond Demas.

But after two days of practice at the Under Armour Game in Orlando, Rivals National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell had Jarrett atop his list, followed by Clemson’s EJ Williams, LSU’s Kayshon Boutte and then Fleming.

It has only been a couple days and it’s only one event instead of an entire recruiting cycle where Fleming led the way at wide receive,r but an argument could be made that some significant changes are coming to the wide receiver rankings after the all-star events.

The first day of practice at the All-American Bowl in San Antonio took place Tuesday and that’s when four-stars Gee Scott Jr. (Ohio State), Javon Baker (Alabama commit), Gary Bryant (uncommitted) and others took the field.

Fleming has held firm at the top spot for months, through an important offseason and through his senior season. But others might be performing better at the all-important all-star events.

FARRELL'S VIEW

We ask Farrell whether he thinks Fleming should stay atop the wide receiver rankings or if we’re going to see some movement at the No. 1 spot?

“I think Fleming will probably stay on top, but a lot depends on how everyone does in the games themselves. He’s been good this week at Under Armour, but I’m not sure there is a wide receiver in this class who is a top 10 national player. It’s a deep year, but not a great year at the top where a guy like Julio Jones leads the way. Fleming was better than Jarrett on Tuesday as Rakim has some drops and I’d still take Fleming first at the wide receiver slot right now, but it’s very close.”
