CEDAR HILL, Tex. -- 2020 recruit Lorando Johnson’s future is likely lies on the defensive side of the ball, but a few weeks ago at the Dallas event of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Series presented by adidas, breaking up passes in one-on-ones wasn’t enough.
Against Duncanville’s Stacy Brown - who is becoming a pretty well known prospect in his own right - Johnson lined up at wide receiver and beat him deep on a hitch-and-go. Perhaps that’s not shocking considering TCU has stepped up as one of the top teams in his recruitment and 2017 wide receiver signees Jalen Reagor and Omar Manning have been among the most vocal in recruiting him.
“Jalen Reagor, he told me “it’s home,” he said. “He told me at the end of the day, I know where to go. Omar just tells me that it’s like the best place in the world.”
Johnson said that right now, TCU is his early leader but because of more than just the talks that he’s had about the program with his friends. He said that the relationships that he’s built with the staff have been what’s helped put the Frogs in the driver’s seat.
“I talk with TCU almost every other day,” he said. “Other that, I’m just relaxing … I would say there is a lot of interaction with them, we talk about everything and it’s like a family.”
Johnson holds five total FBS offers, and said that among them, Oklahoma State would likely be his pick for his next visit. He has already been out to visit the Cowboys once this year and had positive things to say about his visit.
IN HIS WORDS
On his impression of Oklahoma State’s campus
“It’s kind of like in the middle of nowhere, but you can make a lot of friends out there,” he said. “The school has a lot of things to do just at the facilities, which I like.”
On what he saw from Oklahoma State in games last fall
“They’re a composed team,” he said. “In the times that I saw them losing, I didn’t see anyone pointing fingers, getting mad, they just stayed calm and kept on playing.”
RIVALS REACTION
Although it’s encouraging for the Frogs to be called an early leader by Johnson, there is still a long way to go in his recruitment. With his size and athleticism, he’s bound to be the focus of several programs looking to battle it out for a play-making defensive back. Johnson also said that Baylor has been another team relatively heavily involved with him this season, so several of the bigger programs in the region seem to have him circled on their 2020 recruiting boards.
