The first round of the NFL Draft is in the books and Rivals.com takes a look at each prospect in order, recounting our ranking of them out of high school and, more importantly, playing win, lose or draw to determine how we did years ago projecting these players to NFL success. Led by the No. 1 pick, defensive end Myles Garrett, there are many more wins than anything else.
Ten five-stars and nine four-stars were selected in the first round.
1. CLEVELAND BROWNS - MYLES GARRETT
Out of high school: Garrett was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2014. He was No. 2 overall, the No. 1 weakside defensive end and No. recruit from Texas.
Judge Farrell: WIN. Garrett was a five-star and the only issue is that he should have been the No. 1 player in the country and not No. 2 (Da’Shawn Hand was No. 1), but beyond that we nailed this one.
2. CHICAGO BEARS - MITCH TRUBISKY
Out of high school: Trubisky was a three-star in the Class of 2013. He was not ranked nationally, but was the No. 21 dual-threat quarterback and the No. 53 recruit from Ohio.
Judge Farrell: LOSS. He put up crazy numbers and despite a lack of huge offers, he clearly should have been ranked higher.
3. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS - SOLOMON THOMAS
Out of high school: Thomas was a four-star in the Class of 2014. He was No. 37 overall, the No. 3 strongside defensive end, behind only Hand and Malik McDowell, and the No. 4 recruit from Texas.
Judge Farrell: WIN. Thomas was on the cusp of a fifth star and was always highly ranked in that great 2014 class.
4. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS - LEONARD FOURNETTE
Out of high school: Fournette was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2014. He was No. 4 overall, the No. 1 running back and the No. 1 recruit from Louisiana.
Judge Farrell: WIN. One of the highest ranked running backs in our history so clearly a win.
5. TENNESSEE TITANS - COREY DAVIS
Out of high school: Davis was a two-star recruit in the Class of 2013 who was not ranked nationally, at his position or in Illinois.
Judge Farrell: LOSS. Even though grades were a factor, we should have had Davis higher, obviously.
6. NEW YORK JETS - JAMAL ADAMS
Out of high school: Adams was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2014. He was No. 38 overall, the No. 3 safety , behind only Quin Blanding and JuJu Smith-Schuster, and the No. 5 recruit from Texas.
Judge Farrell: WIN. Adams just missed being a five star mainly because he lacked length, but he had everything else
7. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS - MIKE WILLIAMS
Out of high school: Williams was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2013. He was No. 222 overall, the No. 27 wide receiver and the No. 4 recruit from South Carolina.
Judge Farrell: WIN. Even though he was just inside the Rivals250, Williams was a four-star and highly thought of coming out of high school.
8. CAROLINA PANTHERS - CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY
Out of high school: McCaffrey was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2014. He was No. 77 overall, the No. 3 all-purpose back, behind only Joe Mixon and Dalvin Cook, and the No. 1 recruit from Colorado.
Judge Farrell: WIN. A Rivals100 prospect from a state that isn’t known for talent is a win to me.
9. CINCINNATI BENGALS - JOHN ROSS
Out of high school: Ross was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2013. He was not ranked nationally, but was the No. 63 wide receiver and the No. 57 recruit from California.
Judge Farrell: LOSS. He was skinny and fast but we worried about his durability. Three stars was too low.
10. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS - PAT MAHOMES
Out of high school: Mahomes was a three-star in the Class of 2014. He was not ranked nationally, but was the No. 12 dual-threat quarterback and the No. 49 recruit from Texas.
Judge Farrell: DRAW. He was only regionally recruited and we still had him as a high three-star and just outside the top 10 in quarterback rankings.
11. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS - MARSHON LATTIMORE
Out of high school: Lattimore was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2014. He was No. 134 overall, the No. 7 athlete and the No. 3 recruit from Ohio, behind only Erick Smith and Dante Booker.
Judge Farrell: WIN. Lattimore fell after a weak performance during the US Army Bowl week but still ranked amongst the top 150 in the country.
12. HOUSTON TEXANS - DESHAUN WATSON
Out of high school: Watson was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2014. He was No. 31 overall, the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback and the No. 2 recruit from Georgia, behind only Raekwon McMillian.
Judge Farrell: WIN. Rivals.com was the only site to have him as a five-star prospect.
13. ARIZONA CARDINALS - HAASON REDDICK
Out of high school: Reddick was not ranked coming out of high school. In fact, he did not even have a profile.
Judge Farrell: LOSS. Reddick was never on our radar. Definitely a miss for us.
14. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES - DEREK BARNETT
Out of high school: Barnett was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2014. He was No. 169 overall, the No. 11 strongside defensive end and the No. 5 recruit from Tennessee.
Judge Farrell: WIN. Vols fans think we failed here, but he was a top 175 player and highly regarded, so I’m counting it as a win.
15. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS - MALIK HOOKER
Out of high school: Hooker was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2012. He was not ranked nationally, but was the No. 52 safety and the No. 15 recruit from Pennsylvania.
Judge Farrell: LOSS. Hooker was a better hoops player than he was a football player out of high school, but as a three-star we fell short on this one.
16. BALTIMORE RAVENS - MARLON HUMPHREY
Out of high school: Humphrey was a five-star in the Class of 2014. He was No. 9 overall, the No. 2 cornerback, behind only Jabrill Peppers, and the No. 1 recruit from Alabama.
Judge Farrell: WIN. We knew he had talent, had him as a top 10 player in that loaded 2014 class and liked his swagger.
17. WASHINGTON REDSKINS - JONATHAN ALLEN
Out of high school: Allen was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2013. He was No. 11 overall, the No. 2 weakside defensive end, behind only Carl Lawson, and the No. 2 recruit from Virginia.
Judge Farrell: WIN. A five-star and top 15 player overall, this one we clearly saw coming.
18. TENNESSEE TITANS - ADOREE JACKSON
Out of high school: Jackson was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2014. He was No. 6 nationally, the No. 1 athlete and the No. 1 recruit from California.
Judge Farrell: WIN. Despite lacking great size, Jackson was always special out of high school and had speed to burn. He is clearly a win as a top six player.
19. TAMPA BAY BUCS - O.J. HOWARD
Out of high school: Howard was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2013. He was No. 16 overall, the No. 1 tight end and the No. 2 recruit from Alabama, behind only Reuben Foster.
Judge Farrell: WIN. The highest-ranked tight end in Rivals history at one point (No. 5 overall during his rankings cycle), Howard was the most athletic and freakish tight end I have ever scouted.
20. DENVER BRONCOS - GARRETT BOLLES
Out of high school: Bolles was a four-star JUCO recruit in the Class of 2016. He was the No. 3 JUCO recruit overall. He attended high school at Westlake in Lehi, Utah, where he was an unranked recruit.
Judge Farrell: WIN. A four star out of JUCO who was just short of that fifth star, we loved Bolles’ potential.
21. DETROIT LIONS - JARRAD DAVIS
Out of high school: Davis was a three-star in the Class of 2013. He was not ranked nationally, but was the No. 30 outside linebacker and the No. 32 recruit from Georgia.
Judge Farrell: LOSS. We had other linebackers in the Gators class ranked higher and didn’t see this coming.
22. MIAMI DOLPHINS - CHARLES HARRIS
Out of high school: Harris was a two-star recruit in the Class of 2013. He was not ranked nationally, at his position or in Missouri.
Judge Farrell: LOSS. Harris was a miss, plain and simple.
23. NEW YORK GIANTS - EVAN ENGRAM
Out of high school: Engram was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2013. While he was not ranked nationally, he was the No. 34 tight end and the No. 65 recruit from Georgia.
Judge Farrell: LOSS. Engram was a wide receiver playing tight end in high school who was lightly recruited, but we missed his top end potential.
24. OAKLAND RAIDERS - GAREON CONLEY
Out of high school: Conley was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2013. He was not ranked nationally, but was the No. 50 cornerback and the No. 37 recruit from Ohio.
Judge Farrell: LOSS. A first-rounder should probably be a bit higher than No. 50 at his position, so I’ll say loss here.
25. CLEVELAND BROWNS - JABRILL PEPPERS
Out of high school: Peppers was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2014. He was No. 3 nationally, the No. 1 cornerback and the No. 1 recruit from New Jersey.
Judge Farrell: WIN. A top three player and five-star, we loved Peppers from the first time we saw him as a freshman.
26. ATLANTA FALCONS - TAKKARIST MCKINLEY
Out of high school: McKinley was a three-star recruit coming out of high school in the Class of 2013 and then a four-star JUCO recruit in the Class of 2014.
Judge Farrell: WIN. The four-star out of JUCO makes this a win to me as this kid was (and still is) raw but a great athlete.
27. BUFFALO BILLS - TRE'DAVIOUS WHITE
Out of high school: White was a five-star in the Class of 2013. He was No. 18 overall, the No. 4 cornerback and the No. 1 recruit from Louisiana.
Judge Farrell: WIN. A top 20 player in the 2013 class and a five-star, it took him longer to develop than others but he is clearly a home run for us.
28. DALLAS COWBOYS - TACO CHARLTON
Out of high school: Charlton was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2013. He was No. 237 overall, the No. 10 weakside defensive end and the No. 13 recruit from Ohio.
Judge Farrell: WIN. Another prospect just inside the Rivals250, but his ranking was based on long-term potential as he was a project, so I’ll count this as a win.
29. CLEVELAND BROWNS - DAVID NJOKU
Out of high school: Njoku was a three-star in the Class of 2014. He was not ranked nationally or at his position, but he was the No. 17 recruit from New Jersey.
Judge Farrell: LOSS. He was a freaky athlete but not such a great football player, but based on his ceiling we should have had him as a four-star.
30. PITTSBURGH STEELERS - T.J. WATT
Out of high school: Watt was a three-star in the Class of 2013. He was not ranked nationally or at his position, which was actually tight end, but he was the No. 9 recruit from Wisconsin.
Judge Farrell: DRAW. On the one hand, the last name Watt should have clued us in to his potential but on the other hand he was a tight end recruit to us, just like J.J.
31. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS - REUBEN FOSTER
Out of high school: Foster was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2013. He was No. 13 overall, the No. 1 inside linebacker and the No. 1 recruit from Alabama.
Judge Farrell: WIN. Foster was a five-star even after a high school injury and carrying too much weight, so we believed all along.
32. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS - RYAN RAMCZYK
Out of high school: Ramcyzk was not ranked coming out of high school. He actually began his collegiate career at Winona State before transferring to Wisconsin.
Judge Farrell: DRAW. He had no profile but he also pretty much gave up football to become a welder, so this is not a loss.
