Each week during the college football season we’ll use Wednesday as a chance to look back at three former three-star prospects that shined during the previous week’s college football action. This week we look at three running backs that came through in big ways for their teams on Saturday.
MORE CHECKUPS: Five-stars | Four-stars
JOSH ADAMS, NOTRE DAME
As a recruit: Adams didn’t have many offers but his final choices came down to an impressive quartet of schools: Notre Dame, Penn State, Pittsburgh and Stanford. Once Adams took an unofficial to South Bend he fell in love with the school and didn’t waste much time making his commitment, announcing a decision during the summer before his senior season.
What he did this week: Adams had impressive seasons as both a true freshman and a sophomore but his campaign for the Irish in 2017 is one of the reasons they are vying for a spot in the College Football Playoff. In Saturday’s blowout victory over N.C. State, Adams rushed for 202 yards and a touchdown, his second 200-yard game of the season. Adams has already eclipsed his yardage total from 2016 despite having 26 fewer carries this year than he had all of last season. If he can keep putting up big numbers not only will the Irish keep having success but he could have a chance to make a run at the Heisman Trophy.
MYLES GASKIN, WASHINGTON
As a recruit: Despite putting up big numbers as a high school prospect and being ranked in the top 10 in the state of Washington in 2015, Gaskin just netted one offer outside of Washington and Washington State, courtesy of Arizona State. But the Seattle native didn’t need many offers as he ended his recruitment 11 months prior to National Signing Day, committing to the Huskies during the winter of his junior year.
What he did this week: Gaskin put up massive numbers in each of his two seasons and is well on his way to having another 1,000-yard-plus campaign in 2017. In Saturday’s victory over UCLA, Gaskin rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown, one of his best performances of the season. After making it to the College Football Playoff a year ago, Washington continues to be ranked among the country’s top teams and is hoping to play its way back into a spot this season. With Gaskin putting up big numbers and climbing the school’s all-time rushing list, it might still be a possibility for the Huskies to make it back into the picture.
J.J. TAYLOR, ARIZONA
As a recruit: Despite being a major playmaker for a program known for producing talent in California, Taylor had to overcome questions about his size during the recruiting process and received just two Power Five offers, courtesy of Arizona and Washington State. He jumped on his chance to commit to the Wildcats, joining the fold during the summer prior to his senior season.
What he did this week: Wildcats quarterback Khalil Tate has been getting all the attention for his gaudy rushing numbers but it was Taylor who led the Wildcats in rushing during Saturday’s victory over Washington State. The 5-foot-6 back had a career day, rushing for 152 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries. The threat of Tate’s legs has only opened things up for Taylor, who has nearly doubled his yardage totals from his freshman season in 2016. The Wildcats are now ranked and have a pair of dangerous ball-carries.
