Junior to Watch: Thomas Herring
School: Los Angeles (Calif.) Fremont

Position: Athlete/Tight End/Offensive Line/Defensive Tackle
Size and Speed: Herring stands 6-foot-6, weighs 292 pounds and runs the 40 in 4.8. Herring works out on the bench with 225 pounds and his max is 275. His squat is 500 and his dead lift is 350.
Honors: Herring was selected all-league and all-area as a tight end for his junior season performance.
Statistics: He caught 28 passes for and scored three touchdowns as a junior. Herring also played defensive line but Fremont didn’t keep stats. “Thomas was a dominant force when he wanted to be,” Duffy said.
Favorite Colleges: Herring already has written offers from both local schools; UCLA and USC. Nebraska has also thrown their hat into the ring with a written offer. As far verbal offers go Fremont head coach Peter Duffy told Rivals.com that “everyone that I have talked to already said they are going to offer Thomas and I’ve talked to everybody.” Herring will probably end up just taking unofficial visits to UCLA and USC while he will be offered official trips by the likes of Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Miami and Miami.
Skinny: There is no doubt that super sized athlete Thomas Herring will not only be one of the most sought after players out of the Golden State this season, but for the entire nation as well. One source told Rivals that if there is a trench player with more upsides than Herring to please let him know and that is just the tip of the iceberg of accolades coming Herring’s way.
Herring is a national recruit and the type of kid who will get the above 50 offer range before the recruiting season is done.
More than likely there won’t be an early committal out of Herring and look for him to take all five official visits plus unofficial visits to UCLA and USC.
“Thomas is much more focused this season,” Duffy said. “He has become an incredibly hard worker.”
“When Thomas wants to play, he is unstoppable,” Duffy said. “When he turns it on there is no one better.”
“Thomas has benefited from playing with guys like Marco Guerra (UNLV), Mark Bradford (Stanford), Milvon James (UCLA) and Mike Beach (Arizona),” Duffy said. “He was able to see what it took to be a good football player and a D-I prospect by their example”
“Herring’s work ethic has improved 110% since last season,” Duffy said. “He is working like he wants to be the nation’s number one prospect.”
“Thomas doesn’t know how good he is yet,” Duffy said. “He is just beginning to go full speed.”
What does Herring want in a school?
“I want to go to a school that has a good coaching staff,” Herring said. “I want to be coached well, like I was in high school.”
Does Herring have a favorite school?
“No, not really everyone is about the same,” Herring said. “I liked Miami when I was growing up but I really don’t have any favorites.”
Though Herring plays tight end and defensive line, he could project as an offensive tackle on the D-I level. He has the athleticism and versatility to play a variety of positions.
Herring is also an outstanding basketball player, but he finally realizes that football is the game that will get him a D-I scholie and secure his future.
Herring is a great young man who has overcome life’s obstacles. Whoever gets this young will be landing a player with tremendous upsides and a player who has the potential to play on Sunday’s.
