Texas Region spotlight: Five hot prospects

Trent Gordon

The spring has been kind to a number of Texas recruits, even with several rising sophomores. As recruits work through the camp season and put up big performances and testing numbers, more teams are getting involved with more players. Here’s a look at the players that have been the most popular names in the Lone Star State over the past few weeks.

HOT PROSPECTS BY REGION: Southeast | Midwest | Mid-Atlantic | West

Gordon is getting to the point where he is nearing a commitment, but right up until last week, he was picking up offers from major FBS programs and Ivy League schools alike. He recently took visits to LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and West Virginia - the Buckeyes being the only team in that group that has not offered yet. Gordon is an interesting DB who might be best used as a safety or nickel, but he's scrappy and heady enough to play corner very capably. Right now he’s sitting at upwards of 35 total offers.

Bush’s recruitment caught fire this spring after the numbers he posted while testing at camps started making the rounds with college coaches. He holds over 35 offers now, including March offers from Colorado, Kansas, Louisville, UCF and UCLA. Coaches love his length and ability to win battles for the ball in the air, and he truly fits the mold of a prototypical outside receiver. Bush isn’t considering narrowing his list down to finalists until after visiting some campuses this summer.

Allen, Tex., wide receiver Carson Schleker might have had a bigger February than March, but his recruitment has clearly been on an upswing this spring. Shleker picked up seven offers last month, including Kansas, West Virginia and Wisconsin, and added Illinois and Minnesota this month. He’s quick and productive. Regardless of how many more offers he picks up this spring, he’s due for a big senior season on an Allen team loaded with talent.

Henderson committed to Oklahoma during a junior day event in Norman this spring with fellow top 2019 receiver Theo Wease, but that hasn’t kept the offers from coming in. Just this week, he’s picked up Miami, Penn State and Texas. Maybe teams think since he’s just entering his junior season, his commitment isn’t a strong one. Either way, his talent is far too much to ignore. Henderson has now crossed the 25-offer threshold and will continue to be one of the hardest-pursued prospects in the state.

Cavazos, a 2020 prospect, has quickly picked up five offers this spring, and they are a strong five to start with. Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and most recently Tennessee make up the list for now, but when a player comes out the gates with a group like that, it’s not likely to stay that way for long. Although Cavazos is a young gun, he’s already a long defensive back. Like Bush, he saw his recruitment catch fire after some eye-popping numbers with his speed and agility testing earlier this spring.
