Is another top five-star prospect lining up to commit to the Georgia Bulldogs?
Five-star defensive back Tyreke Johnson from Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity International is serious about other programs – including Florida and UCLA – but it seems as if Georgia could have the edge in his recruitment.
And it cannot hurt that the Bulldogs are playing so well and look like the team to beat in the SEC East. Nor can it hurt that coach Kirby Smart’s squad has the No. 12 recruiting class nationally led by five-stars QB Justin Fields and RB Zamir White.
The Gators could be intriguing since they’ve developed defensive backs so well over the years and put many of them in the NFL. UCLA has always been a school that Johnson has watched closely; the idea of being in the bright lights of L.A. seem to enamor Johnson.
But would it be any surprise at all if he picks Georgia?
Are the Bulldogs – again – in line to land another five-star prospect, this time on the defensive side of the ball, to add to an already loaded defensive group?
FIRST TAKE: ROB CASSIDY, RIVALS.COM SOUTHEAST RECRUITING ANALYST
“(Georgia) is probably the leader. Johnson is enigmatic in the way that he does few interviews and has guarded his decision-making process. He was high on UCLA at a time and then was considered a Florida lean, even though it's unclear how high he is on the Gators' wish list. As a player, his size and physicality are what stand out. He closes well and likes to lay big hits.”
SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM NATIONAL RECRUITING DIRECTOR
“A lot of people think it’s Georgia. There was a lot of talk about Georgia originally. Early on, a lot of people thought it was Florida but they can’t close on anybody recently big in the state. A lot of signs were pointing to a commitment to Georgia around August so I think you’d have to think he’s going to end up being a Georgia Bulldog right now.
“He’s physical as heck. He’s a big hitter, he’s aggressive in press coverage. He can cover slot receivers. He could be a corner but I don’t think that’s his natural strength. He’s one of those guys who could play corner, could play safety, could play nickel. He can line up all over the field and he’s very aggressive in the run game so you have to like him.”
