THE STORYLINE

Of the top 19 players in the Texas state rankings, three are committed to Oklahoma as the Sooners have taken an early edge in grabbing pledges from some of the best players there.

Out of that same group, Texas A&M has two commitments. Texas has zero so far.

More than being critical of the Longhorns’ “slow” start with 2019 prospects in the state, especially with nearly a year to go before National Signing Day, the question now becomes whether Oklahoma can build off its early success and continue to land some of Texas’ top players in this recruiting class.

The Sooners have commitments from four-star receiver Trejan Bridges, four-star tight end Austin Stogner and four-star running back Isaiah Spiller but nine of the top 10 prospects from Texas remain uncommitted. On Sunday night, Oklahoma added three-star defensive end Kori Roberson from Manvel, Texas.

The Longhorns will get theirs and the Aggies could be much more competitive with elite talent in the state now that coach Jimbo Fisher has taken over. So will Oklahoma continue to have success in Texas – especially coming off the College Football Playoff – or are things about to get much tougher for the Sooners?

FIRST TAKE: JOSH MCCUISTION, SOONERSCOOP.COM

“There is reason to think it will continue, though, recruiting in the state of Texas is as competitive as any point I can remember with A&M, Texas and Oklahoma all having cause to believe in their chances with a number of elite prospects. A big part of Oklahoma’s early 2019 success has been, in part, about early identification and making players a priority before others really knew what was there. Some of the top targets they are still heavily involved with are Theo Wease, Arjei Henderson, Kenyon Green, Tyler Johnson, Marquez Beason and Marcus Stripling.” – McCUISTION

SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM

“It’s going to be more difficult but Oklahoma can definitely still do it. They’re coming off another playoff appearance and they’re recruiting at a high level defensively. They’re as hot of a name as anybody. If you look at actual wins and losses compared to Texas and Texas A&M, they’re a better option for a kid who wants to go and win. It’s going to be a great three-team race for a lot of those Texas kids between Texas A&M, Texas and Oklahoma.” – FARRELL
