THE STORYLINE

When Kedrick Reescano visited Michigan State in January it was cold but he got over the freezing temperatures and committed to the Spartans because he felt coach Mel Tucker had the best plan for his future.

The four-star running back maintained that pledge for about nine months but in recent days - and with many other programs coming on strong - the New Caney, Texas standout reopened his recruitment.

In a statement, Reescano said Michigan State would remain one of his top schools but after visits to Ole Miss and Oklahoma State recently and a weekend trip planned to Texas A&M, it looks like the Spartans could be falling away as a serious contender.

Ranked as the No. 10 running back nationally, Reescano has rushed for 1,200 yards and 22 touchdowns on 148 carries so far this season. The Spartans are now without a running back pledge in this class.

LOCAL REACTION

Reescano is not only a big loss on the field, posting huge statistics and leading New Caney on an extraordinary run during his senior season, but Reescano is also one of Michigan State’s longest and most vocal commitments of the 2023 class.

The third decommitment of the Spartans 2023 class leaves Michigan State with just 12 commitments and currently no running back after not bringing in a high school running back in the 2022 class. - Jason Killop, SpartanMag.com

NATIONAL REACTION

This one definitely stings for Michigan State because Reescano is proving to be one of the best running backs in the 2023 class and coach Mel Tucker and his staff deserve credit for identifying him early even if the Spartans couldn’t keep him until signing day. Oklahoma State was the first Power Five offer for Reescano, Ole Miss is running the ball so well in coach Lane Kiffin’s offense and more will be known following this Texas A&M visit but it looks like the Spartans have lost out for the long-time commitment. Firepower like this is needed in Michigan State’s offense so this one does hurt. - Adam Gorney, National Recruiting Director
