THE STORYLINE

David Abiara committed to Notre Dame in late March and it was a big recruiting win for the Irish.

The three-star defensive end from Mansfield (Texas) Legacy was also seriously considering Oklahoma among others schools, but Notre Dame’s persistence and prestige played a big role in Abiara’s decision.

However, his recent de-commitment does not come as a major surprise. Abiara’s communication with the Irish staff had cooled over time and then it looked like Notre Dame and the Texas prospect had started to rebuild the relationship.

Then there were reports that Abiara is facing legal issues after being charged with criminal trespassing over the fall. That situation - along with Abiara still looking at other schools - could have been the impetus for the parting of ways in recent days.

Oklahoma, Texas and SMU are some schools that have been mentioned in Abiara’s recruitment, but it will be interesting to see how things play out now with some off-the-field concerns. Notre Dame will move on - and maybe even look for one more defensive end in this class.

LOCAL REACTION

“Abiara would have been a great fit for Notre Dame as a strong-side defensive end, but this decommitment has been brewing for six months. He went back and forth between Notre Dame, Oklahoma and a couple in-state schools, so much so that the Irish staff went ahead and flipped Los Gatos, Calif., defensive end Will Schweitzer from Nebraska. There was a period in October where it looked like Notre Dame and Abiara smoothed things over, but then a report came out that he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass, which occurred in September.

“Considering that Notre Dame landed Schweitzer, who is equally as talented as Abiara, and this news has been expected to occur for so long, I can’t say that the sting factor is that great.” – Mike Singer, BlueandGold.com

NATIONAL REACTION

"This isn’t a big issue. Yes it’s nice to have a talented kid like Abiara from Texas, which is a fertile recruiting area, but Notre Dame doesn’t play. Once the off-field issues came to light, he was gone and Notre Dame will be just fine.” — Mike Farrell, National Recruiting Director, Rivals.com
