THE STORYLINE

Daquayvious Sorey committed early to Georgia. It looked like he had found his home and the 2023 four-star receiver picked the Bulldogs in February 2021.

But the Chipley, Fla., standout backed off his pledge in recent days and became the second prospect over the last couple weeks to decommit from Georgia joining Kayin Lee. Georgia usually only delivers good news on the recruiting trail but has lost these two players recently.

Whether it was an assistant coaching change or a focus on other top prospects for the class, Sorey now has to look for a new home with a lot of other SEC programs including Florida involved along with Florida State being just over an hour to the east.

Sorey’s cousin, Xavian, plays at Georgia but it looks like the 2023 four-star receiver will be headed elsewhere. Lots of teams have shown interest in recent months and so he should have plenty of options moving forward.

LOCAL REACTION

Sorey’s decommitment leaves Georgia with just one receiver, Raymond Cottrell, currently committed in the 2023 class. However, Bulldog fans need not be worried. Bryan McClendon is one of the most well-respected receiver coaches in the country. He has the Bulldogs right in the thick of it with pass-catchers such as Brandon Inniss, Santana Fleming and Rico Flores. Other prospects such as Kyler Kasper have relationships with McClendon dating back to his days at Oregon. The key at this point will be keeping Cottrell in the class, something that seems likely to happen. He gives the Bulldogs a talented foundation to build around as they pursue other top targets. Losing a talented player like Sorey is never ideal, but Georgia is still in good shape to land a talented receiver class in 2023. - Jed May, UGASports.com

NATIONAL REACTION

Tight end Brock Bowers was by far Georgia’s top pass catcher last season and the favorite target of quarterback Stetson Bennett. That will not change heading into next season as Bowers should only be a bigger weapon but the Bulldogs will need to load up on playmaking receivers. Sorey could have been one of those options but it looks like that ship has sailed. I still think the Bulldogs will be fine. Cottrell had a big junior season and is on the cusp of the top 100 players nationally. There are other big targets on the board and Georgia will get its fair share. Having Sorey in the class would have been a very nice addition but the Bulldogs will live. - Adam Gorney, National Recruiting Director
