Rivals250 DB Leon O'Neal not done with A&M, still vetting Top 4

HOUSTON, Tex. -- While the first early signing period takes place this week, one of the biggest names on the Texas football recruiting map is taking a pass on the festivities.

Rivals250 safety Leon O’Neal ended his commitment to Texas A&M after the Aggies hired Jimbo Fisher in the wake of Kevin Sumlin’s dismissal following the regular season. He’s very well could renew his commitment to A&M, but after the changes to the staff, there is some due process to go through, and now Clemson, Georgia and Oklahoma re-enter the picture as possible destinations for him.

“I have a lot of opportunities with each school,” he said. “People ask me when I’m going to sign, I don’t know.”

O’Neal is set to play in the Army All-American Bowl next month and said that he toyed with the possibility of committing during the game, but that seems unlikely as he wants to make sure he visits Athens and Clemson again before making his next commitment.

“I was thinking about making my announcement there,” he said. “I still have to see Clemson again. I’ve only been there once. I went to Georgia once as well, but I went to A&M nine times. It’s more about getting to know the coaches and stuff like that.”

In the meantime, he’ll get the chance to watch three of his top-four teams compete for a shot at a national championship over the holidays - a situation even the ever-optimistic defensive back couldn’t have predicted at the beginning of the season.

“The crazy part is I had always been telling my parents that these are the schools that I liked,” he said. “I didn’t expect Georgia to be there, I didn’t expect Oklahoma to be in there - especially after the Iowa State loss - and I didn’t know Clemson was going to be in there after the Syracuse loss, but I watched those teams every day.”
