Rivals100 cornerback talks top five, commitment date

Asante Samuel doesn’t plan to drag out his recruitment for the sake of dragging it out.

That much is clear.

On Wednesday, the Rivals100 defensive back announced a top five of Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Miami and Ohio State. He also stated his intentions to announce a verbal commitment on June 2.

With things progressing quickly toward an end for Samuel, Rivals.com got the four-star cornerback's thoughts on each of the five schools still alive in the race to land his commitment.

Samuel on Alabama …

“You know why Alabama. I mean, Alabama is Alabama. You can’t deny Alabama. They are going to keep being Alabama. They’re always in the hunt and they produce all that talent every single year.”

Samuel on Florida State …

“Florida State, man. That’s my favorite school since I was a little kid. I just love everything about it there. I love the coaches and how everything is set up over there.”

Samuel on LSU …

“The coaches there. I like them. I talk to the coaches there a lot. They reach out a lot. I like the defensive back tradition. They’re the real DB U up there. I don’t know, I just like them a lot for a lot of reasons.”

Samuel on Miami …

“Miami has changed. Miami is turning that program around. They’ve done a lot in just one year, so there’s not telling what they’re going to do in the next couple of years. They have everything going now, so you have to keep them in mind.”

Samuel on Ohio State …

“I have a lot of friends and a lot of old teammates up there. Those guys hit me up a lot and tell me how it is. They say great things. I have [Trevon] Grimes and [Nick] Bosa up there. Then I also have Damon Arnette. And I know Binjimen Victor. I played against him. He’s up there, too. He’s cool.”

Rivals Reaction: Florida State seems to hold a slight edge here, but all five schools remain in play. For now, LSU seems like the least likely landing spot of the group. Samuel will make his commitment before the upcoming season so schools looking to sway his decision will have to do so without the use of official visits. Topping FSU will be tough but not impossible.

Prediction: Florida State
