The final weekend of regular season games in Florida brought a pair of
interesting matchups featuring a long list of college-bound players. First,
Miami's Gulliver Preparatory Academy bested Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna
High School 30-26 before Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas defeated
Pembroke Pines (Fla.) Flannigan High 19-14 in the nightcap. Below are news and
notes from both games.
I was impressed with...
Miami commit Joseph Jackson had the day's most impressive performance. The
massive Jackson boasts a college-ready body and seemed to waltz into the Chaminade
backfield on most snaps. His long arms and upper-body strength make him a
handful for any high school lineman, so the fact that he was highly disruptive
as a defensive end shocked nobody. Jackson made his mark on the offensive side
as well, though. Playing tight end, Jackson pulled in a pair of touchdown
passes, one of which featured a long run after the catch. Jackson's athleticism
and versatility make him an elite prospect.
Flanagan linebacker Devin Bush lacks elite height but continues to show
why that isn't much of a concern. Bush swarmed around the ball on Friday and
made a number of plays to help hold a high-powered St. Thomas offense in check
for most of the night. Bush is sound fundamentally and plays with little regard
for his own body. His closing speed is what makes him a high-level prospect, but
he's not half bad in coverage, either.
Sam Bruce always finds a way to impress and, even on a night that saw
his catches limited, he impacted the game. Bruce, a Miami commit, proves time
and again that good things happen when he touches the ball, and, on Friday, the
Miami commit scored a crucial touchdown on a jet sweep. Bruce is as explosive a
wide receiver there is in the country and is as dangerous as anyone when he gets
the ball with room to work.
Stanford Samuels' length never goes unnoticed. And that, combined with
his solid footwork, have made him one of the top junior cornerbacks in America.
Samuels did a solid job against a pair of high-level wide receivers on Friday,
making plays against five-star Trevon Grimes and four-star Sam Bruce.
Samuels was called for a questionable pass interference penalty near the end
zone against Grimes, on a play that seemed to feature nothing more than
impressive coverage. Still, Samuels' size compliments his coverage skills in an
all-important manner.
This is Miami commit Joseph Jackson being an absolute handful. 7-0 Gulliver https://t.co/41tDc519o8- Rob Cassidy (@Cassidy_Rob) November 6, 2015
I was surprised by...
Chaminade-Madonna's Shaun Shivers may end up being one of the fastest
prospects in South Florida in the coming years. The class of 2018 prospect is
undersized but has the kind of quickness that allows a prospect to overcome
that. Shivers, a running back, is Sam Bruce's cousin and runs with shocking
power for a player of his limited stature. On Friday, he ran over a much larger
defender during a long touchdown run and seemed to get stronger as the game
progressed. Shivers was at his best in the second half. Fellow Chaminade-Madonna
sophomore Wide reviver Xavier Williams also impressed. Williams was a
threat in the return game and the passing game and has a bright future as a
college prospect. He carries solid length, notable quickness and a few early
scholarship offers.
St. Thomas Aquinas defensive back
had a nice day despite being matched up against four-star wide receiver
Dredrick Snelson. Carriere-Williams, a Cincinnati commit, made
cheer-inducing diving pass breakup in the end zone late in the game, but was
steady for the rest of the contest as well. Carriere-Williams strength is his
quickness but he seems to have added muscle in the last two months. Should
Cincinnati hold on to his commitment, it will be getting a steal.
Other notes...
Miami
commit Sam Bruce plans to visit Florida for its Nov. 28 game with
Florida State before shutting down recruiting travel for the holidays. After
Christmas, Bruce says he intends to take official visits to Florida and
Alabama. He also wants to return to Miami. Bruce says his final
official visit will be to Florida State or Auburn, but he has not yet
determined which.
St.
Thomas Aquinas wide receiver Michael Irvin, another Miami commit, says
he is mulling over the idea of taking official visits after the season. Irvin
declined to say which other schools are involved in his recruitment, but noted
that even if he does take a look around, he commitment to Miami will remain
strong.
Miami
commit Cedrick Wright is yet to schedule any official visits, but says
he is planning to set dates with Clemson and Florida. The Tigers and
Gators both remain active in his recruitment while Alabama is also keeping an
Notre DameClick iron in the fire so to speak. Here to view this Link. has amped up its recruitment of Miami commit Joseph Jackson in recent
weeks and Jackson says he will consider visiting Notre Dame after the season.
Jackson says his commitment to Miami is strong but will take official visits to
Florida, Alabama and South Carolina in the coming months, and that list
could grow before things are said and done. Jackson says he is "still debating"
a trip to Notre Dame.
