Rivals Recap: Georgia playoffs

The state football playoffs kicked off in Georgia on Friday night, and Rivals100 defensive tackle Derrick Brown and the Lanier Longhorns hosted East Paulding in a Class 6A opening-round contest. Thanks in part to a touchdown catch from the 6-foot-4, 320-pound Brown, Lanier came back from an early deficit to win 27-13.

Lanier linebacker Tyler Taylor made several plays on Friday night and the 6-foot-2, 212-pound prospect looks to have the potential to play several different positions at the next level. He was excellent in pursuit of the quarterback and showed terrific sideline-to-sideline speed. Taylor doesn't have any offers yet, but should see his first few come in soon rather than later.

I was surprised by ...
East Paulding wide receiver Jalen Browder had 12 catches for 58 yards and he made a few eye-popping, one-handed grabs early in the game. Most of his catches came on swing passes out of the backfield, but Browder has good size (6-foot-3, 185 pounds) and looked dangerous when he got the ball in his hands.
Lanier is loaded with talent, especially in the Class of 2017. In addition to Taylor, 2017 linebacker Juwuan JonesClick Brown showed incredible athleticism on the leaping touchdown grab, not only to get open but to leap up and snatch the ball out of the air. It was the play of the game, but Brown's night didn't go so well on defense. He was double-teamed all night and despite shuffling positions along the defensive line, couldn't find much success. Brown still needs to work on developing a better set of moves, especially when his brute strength isn't enough to overpower blockers.
