Rival Views: Who is No. 2 in the Heisman Trophy race?

Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell and National Recruiting Analyst Adam Gorney don’t always see eye to eye. In this edition of Rival Views, the two debate who should be No. 2 in the Heisman Trophy race right now behind Lamar Jackson.

FARRELL'S TAKE: D'ONTA FOREMAN

We all know Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson has already won the Heisman Trophy, so the only intrigue left at this point is who should finish No. 2.

You can look at defensive players such as Jabrill Peppers and Jonathan Allen, who both deserve some mention, but we all know that for some stupid reason the Heisman Trophy is a de facto offense-only award. Oklahoma wide receiver Dede Westbrook could get some consideration because of his eye-popping numbers, but the wide receiver position rarely gets respect when it comes to this award.

To me, No. 2 this year comes down to either a quarterback or a running back. Jalen Hurts has been impressive for Alabama, but he’s a very good player on a great team and not the other way around. So forget him. And forget Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, because he shouldn’t even be in the conversation with his completion percentage down, his yards-per-attempt down and his interception ratio up.

That brings me to a running back: Texas' D’Onta Foreman. I know the Longhorns are only .500, but where would they be without him? He’s rushed for 1,613 yards, averaging 6.7 yards per carry, and he will surpass 2,000 yards this season even if Texas doesn’t make a bowl game. Foreman could run for 300-plus against Kansas and he will go well over 100 yards against TCU.

Foreman has been mentioned in the Texas record books alongside former Longhorn greats like Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams, both Heisman Trophy winners. He should be No. 2 right now and by season’s end in the Heisman voting.

GORNEY'S VIEW: DEDE WESTBROOK

This is a long shot because unless Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson completely tanks at the end of the season, he’s going to win the Heisman Trophy.

But why not give Oklahoma wide receiver Dede Westbrook a chance? Have you watched the Sooners? He is unstoppable on the outside. No one has come close to defending him and Oklahoma could probably get him the ball on every down because Westbrook gets open against everybody.

So far this season, Westbrook has 68 catches for 1,254 yards and 14 touchdowns. Only receivers from East Carolina, Louisiana Tech and Western Kentucky have more yards than him and one from Middle Tennessee State is tied.

That means Westbrook is dominating by any measure against top competition and deserves consideration as the best player in college football. If he blows up West Virginia’s solid defense this weekend, Westbrook needs to seriously be in the conversation with Jackson, who’s also having an incredible season.
