R100 DB Caden Sterns looks strong in Week 5, talks Texas commitment

CONVERSE, Tex. -- Even though Cibolo-Steele lost a heartbreaker on Friday night to Converse-Judson on Friday night, Rivals100 defensive back Caden Sterns did as much as one guy could to keep his team in it.

Judson actually got out to a four touchdown lead on Steele, a Texas 6A state championship contender last season, but in addition to his work on defense, his onside kick recovery and touchdown reception brought the Knights to within one score before time ran out.

“Even when it was 7-35, it was still a game,” he said. “We’re going to fight, after everything we’ve been through, if you think the season’s over for us - you’re dead wrong. We have a lot of football left with five games … being the competitors that we are, we don’t like losing, but there is always light in the dark. It was 7-35 and we didn’t give up.”

Sterns committed to Texas in May, after having been previously committed to LSU. Sterns said that he’s still looking forward to a postseason official visit to Austin and then enrolling in January. In the meantime, he said that he’s still being contacted by Alabama and TCU, but has no intention of visiting either.

IN HIS WORDS

Updating on his relationship with the Texas staff

“It’s been great,” he said. “Every time I’m done with a game, I’ll ask them a question about football - about tackling and stuff - I missed a couple of tackles out here. Coach (Jason) Washington or Coach (Craig) Naivar, or just the other commits, it’s a really good bond that we have. I can’t wait to get out there and get started with that family.”

On if he thinks Anthony Cook will commit to Texas this month

“Yeah, I hope he joins us,” he said. “I hope [D’Shawn] Jamison joins us. Time to time I hit (Cook) up and stuff, but at the end of the day, it’s his decision. Wherever he goes, he’s going to be successful, he’s a dog. Hopefully it’s at Texas, but anywhere he goes, he’ll be a good fit.”

RIVALS REACTION

Things still appear full steam ahead for Sterns when it comes to his commitment. During the offseason, he impressed at various events with his coverage skills for a player that has widely been projected as a safety. He had a few moments where he misjudged a where a ball-carrier was headed, but generally was all over the field and didn’t allow receivers to get behind him in coverage.

Sterns is serious about continuing to improve and often spends his time helping younger players as well. It seems as though Texas has designs on moving him around in the secondary, and he has the tools to become an impact player on what is proving to be a stout defensive unit.
