QB Kyron Drones commits to Baylor

Quarantined or not, this spring is certainly becoming commitment season.

Kyron Drones is the latest notable prospect from the Lone Star State to announce his college decision, selecting Baylor out of a double-digit offer sheet that swelled up in the aftermath of a breakthrough junior season in 2019 that resulted in a 16-0 record and culminated in Alvin (Texas) Shadow Creek's first-ever Class 5A state championship.

Drones, who passed for 185 yards and accounted for another 135 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, was the MVP in the title game tilt against Denton Ryan.

Baylor is one of Drones' more recent offers. The Bears followed Auburn, Northwestern, TCU, Arkansas, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and Michigan State in offering the dual-threat quarterback. Drones even named Auburn his leader earlier this spring.

"I just had to really talk to my family about my decision and take virtual tours and ask the coaches a lot of questions. My head coach (Brad Butler), (Shadow Creek offensive coordinator Rene) Glapion and my dad ... I’m close with all of them and they were talking to schools for me then I would talk to them about what fits me best and we would all just talk about me being comfortable and what fits me best."

"It was a very hard decision because I had schools telling me to wait or schools saying I should do it now and I almost committed two weeks agom but I talked to my family again and I waited and I just kept having to talk with them and now, I’m very confident on my decision."

"Just the way the coaches got on me and wanted to talk all the time and saying I’m their dude and I know people at the school already and my parents are close with coaches there."

"The coaches and offense really have me excited because they throw the ball 80-percent of the time which is where I feel I would be best at, and the weapons they have are really dangerous and I know some of them already, so it’s going to be a movie when I get there."

Drones had a breakout junior season in 2019, culminating in a 320-yard, two-touchdown performance in AT&T Stadium last December in which he earned Offensive MVP honors in a state championship-winning performance.

That outing was an exclamation point on Drones' total season output of 3,390 yards passing, a 57-percent completion mark and a 46:10 touchdown to interception ratio. Drones also accounted for 825 yards rushing, including 18 scores on the ground and two 100-plus-yard rushing games on the year.

Drones is a dual-threat playmaker that operates an offense in a unique style, with the ability to sling it downfield with fantastic accuracy or simply bulldoze the competition with his legs. While Drones is a pass-first quarterback, his legs buy him to let his receivers get open downfield, allow him to maneuver within the pocket and extend plays. The threat that Drones poses to find a hole and break off the long run keeps defenses off-balanced and gives opposing defenses headaches.

Drones has a powerful arm and throws a sexy deep ball downfield. He can sling it 40-plus yards downfield with pinpoint accuracy and is built to run a vertical offense. Drones consistently looks to throw the rock first and often can make multiple defenders miss within the pocket before letting it rip downfield.

It's worth pointing out that Drones constantly keeps his eyes downfield and is a smart decision-maker not afraid to check it down or tuck the ball and run. His accuracy improved throughout the year and he's at his best when he's able to set his feet. Drones has enough arm strength to rifle passes in over the middle but loses some of that oomph when he's forced to throw on the move.

Drones is not only evasive within the pocket, but elusive in the open field and is a physical runner. He's previously clocked a 4.89-second 40 time and is a multi-sport athlete that participates in basketball and track.

Drones, at times, struggles with accuracy, throws the balls into traffic and does not consistently find his receivers in stride.
