Pac-12 breakdown: The summer's biggest commitments

Arizona DB commit Rhedi Short

With the summer recruiting circuit all but over, it’s time to take a look back over the past two months and rank the biggest summer commitments for each Pac-12 team.

Early in the recruiting process, Rhedi Short was committed to UCLA, and it made a whole lot of sense. The Los Angeles Cathedral three-star defensive back could stay close to home and play for the Bruins. But Short backed off that pledge and it looked like Oregon had become the frontrunner. However, Arizona swooped in and landed a commitment from the athletic and versatile defensive back in early July to add to an impressive haul on the back end.

ARIZONA STATE

It has been slow on the recruiting front this month for the Sun Devils, but in late June they landed high three-star running back Trelon Smith from Houston (Texas) Cypress Ridge and it could turn out to be a steal. Coach Todd Graham and his staff know how to recruit that position for Arizona State’s offense. Even though Smith was overlooked by a lot of big-time local programs, the three-star has the talent in space and between the tackles to be a special player in Tempe.

CAL

It has not been tremendously active on the recruiting trail for the Golden Bears, either, but in late June coach Sonny Dykes and his staff might have landed their quarterback of the future. Three-star Chase Garbers was excellent at the Steve Clarkson camp and has proven to be one of the best-looking and most consistent quarterbacks in the West this recruiting cycle. He picked Cal over Washington and others and he has all the physical and mental tools to be special in Dykes’ spread offense.

COLORADO

Maurice Bell was seriously considering some big-time offers from the Big Ten with Iowa, Michigan and Nebraska all involved in his recruitment, but he loved what he found at Colorado, and he could have an immediate impact. In the mold of current Colorado receiver Shay Fields, Bell can stretch the field with his speed, he has great hands and he is a competitor. For the Buffaloes to land the high three-star receiver was a steal, and he could step in at that position right away to help turn around that program.

OREGON

The biggest commitment of the summer for Oregon also came in late June when four-star athlete Deommodore Lenoir picked the Ducks over just about everyone else. Lenoir can be a physical, tough cornerback, he could move to safety, and in a pinch the four-star can move over to receiver and make an impact there as well. Don’t count out special teams either for Lenoir because he has the speed and make-you-miss ability that has made so many top players special in Eugene.

OREGON STATE

Landing three-star linebacker David Morris is definitely a big deal. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound recruit from Sherwood, Ore., committed to the Beavers over offers from Boise State, Cal, Oregon and others a little less than two months ago. He’s a nice-sized outside linebacker who can blitz into the backfield, track players down on the sideline and do a little of everything else. He’s a talented kid who could play early in the Beavers’ defense.

STANFORD

Stanford hasn't picked up a 2017 commit since March, when Rivals100 standout Davis Mills picked the Cardinal. That's no cause for concern, however, as Stanford anticipates signing a small class this year. Stanford did add an impressive 2018 pledge earlier this month when Alabama's Jack West committed. West picked the Cardinal over offers from the home-state Crimson Tide and many others, solidifying an impressive pipeline of quarterback talent in the process.

UCLA

The Bruins have dealt with a string of de-commitments and it’s been a relatively slow summer, but UCLA landed a three-star JUCO offensive tackle who could be a big-time player in the coming years. Ronald Rudd from Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Chaffey C.C. is a 6-foot-7, 305-pound prospect, so from a physical standpoint he’s ready to step in right away and be a contributor.

USC

Two top offensive linemen committed to the Trojans this summer, but one can argue that tight end Erik Krommenhoek was the biggest pickup since that position is so loaded out West this recruiting cycle and that it came as something of a surprise. Krommenhoek is a huge target who could stay in and block but can also get open down the field and he has excellent hands. His parents went to UCLA, but the four-star wanted to carve his own path across town.

UTAH

The Utes only have three commits and if it wasn’t for brothers Tristin McCollum and Zyon McCollum, they wouldn’t have had any pledges since March. The brothers, out of Galveston (Texas) Ball, picked Utah in mid-June, and the two defensive backs have been the only pledges since JUCO DT John Penisini committed nearly five months ago.

WASHINGTON

Washington loaded up in a huge way through the spring but also added some important pieces in the last couple months. Four-star defensive back Brandon McKinney is the biggest one. The Orange (Calif.) Lutheran standout is a smart, capable playmaker at safety who has the wits and the physical ability to possibly see the field early with the Huskies.

WASHINGTON STATE

Dipping into Florida for some top prospects is never a bad idea, and that’s exactly what Washington State did in late June when it landed three-star defensive tackle Lamonte McDougle out of Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage. The 6-foot-1, 295-pound recruit had offers from the Big 12, Big 10 and other major conferences so it’s definitely a big pickup for the Cougars.
