STANDING OVATION - MIAMI
The U is back … at least on the recruiting trail. Miami signed its best class since 2008 and beat out both FSU and Florida to land the state’s top class. This is no small accomplishment. Things are good in Coral Gables.
Everyone was surprised by Miami’s blistering start to the 2018 class and they questioned if the Hurricanes could hold on to the commitments they landed. Well, the dust has settled and Mark Richt is pleased with the results. The perception around UM has drastically changed over the past year, and suddenly the program is in the driver’s seat when it comes to recruiting the most fertile recruiting state in the country.
Richt and company landed 18 players who played high school football in Florida, including five-stars Lorenzo Lingard and Mark Pope, each of whom could have gone to nearly any school in the country.
BIGGEST SURPRISE - FSU
Florida State’s transition from Jimbo Fisher to Willie Taggart wasn’t perfectly smooth. Taggart took his time finalizing a staff and hitting the road recruiting. But that didn’t stop FSU from sprinting to the finish line.
FSU’s late charge into the top 10 was as impressive as it was unlikely. It also saw FSU land a pair of prospects from Seffner (Fla.) Armwood High School, which has traditionally given FSU fits when it comes to recruiting.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT - LOUISVILLE
It seems like it happened a long time ago, but try to think back to 2016 when Lamar Jackson won the Heisman and it felt like Louisville was primed to move into the upper echelon of the ACC.
In 2017, Jackson had in many ways a better statistical season than the year before. But the team struggled with consistency, and it showed on the recruiting trail. The Cardinals finished outside of the top 30 in the team rankings and it's hard to see many prospects in this class that will help Louisville take that next step as a program.
BIGGEST MISS - TYSON CAMPBELL
Miami’s class will be fine without Campbell, but letting a five-star get away isn’t ideal. Campbell grew up in the Hurricanes’ backyard and narrowed his list to UM, Alabama and Georgia before picking UGA on National Signing Day.
Mark Richt’s class still finished the cycle ranked No. 5, but losing Campbell took some of the air out of signing day in Coral Gables.
BIGGEST STEAL - JUSTYN ROSS
Every year since 2012, Alabama has signed the top player from its state, but this year Clemson was able take that player right out from under the Crimson Tide's nose. Five-star wide receiver Justyn Ross chose the Tigers over Alabama on National Signing Day, making him the first player since Jameis Winston to be ranked as the top player in Alabama and leave the state to play college football. Clemson signed the top players in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Ohio and South Carolina, so the Crimson Tide aren't alone here.
