Notebook: Busy start in Houston

Week 1 in the state of Texas brought some big-time match-ups to the city of
Houston. Katy topped Kingwood on Thursday, Houston Westfield slipped past Manvel

on Friday and Houston Episcopal was able to get the best of Plano Prestonwood on
Saturday. Several top prospects were on display in all three games and there was
plenty of news on the recruiting front.
No. 1 staying open
Marvin Wilson
Houston (Texas) Episcopal 2017 defensive tackle Marvin Wilson enters the
season ranked No. 1 in his class and has several scholarship offers. He almost
narrowed his list but he is now keeping an open mind so he can see what the
recruiting process is about. He may narrow it down next spring, but for now he
is open.
In the past he has mentioned LSU, Texas A&M and USC as three schools
showing the most interest, but other schools are making their presence known
more and more.
"Everybody is stepping up the pace now," Wilson said. "I had a big summer this
year. I showed everyone I could play even though I go to a private school.
Everybody knows I'm on the scene now."
He plans to attend the Texas A&M/Arizona State game on Sept. 5.
Anderson making visit plans
Deontay Anderson
Manvel (Texas) Rivals100 safety Deontay Anderson has a top five of Ole Miss,
LSU, UCLA, Texas and Texas A&M, and he plans to take all of his official
visits.
All five have his attention for many of the same reasons.
"I really feel comfortable with those schools," Anderson said. "I really feel I
could play at those schools and I really feel like they're great environments at
all of those schools."
Anderson already has official visits scheduled to Texas (Sept. 18) and UCLA
(Oct. 2), and he plans to take unofficial visits to Texas, Texas A&M, Ole Miss
and LSU during the season. He specifically mentioned the Texas A&M/Arizona State
game as one he plans to attend.
In addition to his top five, Anderson is also considering TCU, Georgia and
Florida
The standout defensive back has also adjusted his plans to announce his college
decision.
"it was the Under Armour game but after discussing it with my family I didn't
want to commit at the Under Armour game knowing I would still have official
visits because I want to be fully committed to my school," Anderson said. "So
I'm just going to make it Signing Day."
Cleveland narrowing his list
Tyrie Cleveland
Houston (Texas) Westfield Rivals250 wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland has a top 10
of Arkansas, Texas A&M, TCU, Florida, Baylor, Arizona State, Georgia,
Oklahoma, Alabama and Houston, but that looks like it could change in the
near future.
"Right now I'm looking at Ole Miss, A&M still, TCU, Arkansas, Florida. I should
have a top five coming out probably next week or so," Cleveland said.
He has an official visit scheduled to Arizona State for the weekend of Sept. 25
with teammate and Arizona State commitment Dillon
Sterling-Cole. He is trying to schedule his official visit to Oklahoma, and
he plans to visit Ole Miss in November as well.
He mentioned he may make his decision at the Under Armour All-American game, but
he also said he could decide before then.
Carmouche has four on top
Jordan Carmouche
Manvel (Texas) three-star linebacker Jordan Carmouche received scholarship
offers from across the country, but four schools make up his current list.
Stanford, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri make up his list and all four
are in line to receive official visits during the season.
"They have great coaches, I love the schools, they all have great football
there, and they all have a chance to win a national championship every year,"
Carmouche said.
His first official visit will be to Missouri (Oct. 9), followed by Arkansas
(Oct. 23) and Oklahoma (Nov. 20). He is in talks with Stanford and it looks like
his official visit to Palo Alto will probably take place the weekend of Nov. 13.
Carmouche does not plan to take a fifth official visit and he did not name a
favorite among his top four.
Porter takes his time
Katy (Texas) Rivals250 running back Kyle Porter mentioned Oregon, Arkansas,
Baylor, TCU and Texas as schools who are recruiting him the hardest. Following
Katy's Thursday win over Kingwood, Porter said he has not made any eliminations
and he does not plan to take any official visits during the season.
Porter has been able to visit Oregon, Texas and TCU, and it is safe to say the
three programs made a strong impression. Right now, his focus is on securing an
eighth state championship for the Katy Tigers.
Little in no hurry
Walker Little
Houston (Texas) Episcopal 2017 Rivals100 offensive tackle Walker Little is not
naming any favorites right now, but he does plan to take some visits in the fall
to check out several different college atmospheres.
"Texas vs. Cal will be the first one," Little said. "I'm definitely going to try
and make it out to Stanford, an Alabama game and an Ole Miss game. Those are the
ones I've got on the calendar right now.
His most recent trip was to Stanford and he also talked about possibly attending
the Texas A&M/Arizona State game.
Off to a fast start
Plano (Texas) Prestonwood 2018 cornerback Verone McKinley III already holds
scholarship offers from Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, LSU, Texas Tech,
Tulsa
and Jacksonville State.
The recruiting process is already off to a fast start, and McKinley is taking it
all in right now.
"It's been a blessing, but I'm just taking it slow and being with my teammates
and trying to get better with my teammates really," McKinley said. "That's not
the focus right now, but I've been thinking about some places and trying to go
take some visits later on."
He hopes to take a few unofficial visits around the state of Texas this fall.
More Notables
Houston (Texas)
Westfield linebacker Keeath Magee had a strong performance at the
Rivals Speed and Skill Challenge in March and on Friday night he
was all over the field making tackles. Magee, who played at Beaumont (Texas)
Ozen as a sophomore and Petal (Miss.) as a junior, is the son of coach Keeath
Magee, and he currently holds an offer from Alcorn State. Interest has also
arrived from Kansas, Stephen F. Austin and Texas Tech.
Katy (Texas)
2017 defensive tackle Corey Bethley had a big game to start the season and
showed why Houston and Washington have already extended offers. In addition to
his early offers attention has also arrived from Alabama and Texas. He would
like to take a few unofficial visits this fall.
Houston (Texas)
Westfield has produced some top defensive tackles over the years and 2018
standout Keondre Coburn is definitely one to watch. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound
defender started next to Ed Oliver on Friday night and he made his presence
felt. He is already attracting attention from Houston and LSU.
