NATIONAL POWERS NOT MISSING A BEAT
After looking at the newest version of the Rivals250 it’s easy to see why Alabama and Clemson have faced off in three of the last four national title games. Nick Saban’s program has seven commitments in the Rivals250 and Dabo Swinney’s has six. LSU joins Alabama as the only other team with seven commits in the Rivals250 and Miami also has six, just like Clemson. LSU's verbal commitment from five-star cornerback Elias Ricks, the nation's No. 4 prospect, is the highest ranked committed prospect in the Rivals250.
CALIFORNIA IN POSITION TO SET RECORDS THIS YEAR
Never in the history of Rivals.com has one state finished with more than two players in the top four of the Rivals250, but California has a real chance to make history with the 2020 class. If D.J. Uiagalelei, Justin Flowe and Elias Ricks remain in the top four until the Rivals250 goes final in January, it will be the first time three of the top four players in the Rivals250 are from the same state. The states of Georgia (2013 and 2018), Florida (2015 and 2019), and California (2015 and 2018) have each finished with two players in the top four on two different occasions, but no state has ever managed to surpass that mark. In fact, there have only been two years when three of the top four in the Rivals250 came from the same region (the Mid-South in 2009 and the Southeast in 2013).
QUICK TRIGGERS IN GEORGIA
The elite prospects in the state of Georgia seem to have a quick trigger this year. Half of the state’s 26 players in the Rivals250 are committed already. Alabama went into the Peach State and picked up commitments from four-stars Javon Baker and Javier Morton. Georgia native Kobe Hudson has already committed to Auburn. Four players (Kevin Swint, Sergio Allen, Paul Tchio and John Williams) from Georgia decided to head to Clemson for their college football careers. LSU (Max Johnson), Stanford (Myles Hinton), and Tennessee (Harrison Bailey) each hold one commitment from the state of Georgia. The in-state Dawgs hold commitments from Broderick Jones, Jamil Burroughs and Nazir Stackhouse.
SPIKING TALENT LEVELS
There are some familiar states with at least 10 prospects in the Rivals250, but the two outliers right now are Maryland and Tennessee with 12 each. Maryland has had 10 players only one time (2006) and Tennessee has never had more than nine players in the Rivals250. Aided by the ever-growing private schools, Maryland is loaded in the 2020 class with the highest-ranked prospect in the state being five-star Bryan Bresee. Joining him in the five-star ranks are Chris Braswell and MarShawn Lloyd. There are a total of seven prospects from Maryland in the Rivals100. Tennessee’s Rivals250 contingent is led by new five-star Reggie Grimes. Offensive lineman Chris Morris is just outside of the five-star range right now but there are three other Tennesseans in the Rivals100.
NEW FACES IN THE RIVAL250
This version of the Rivals250 features fewer new additions to the group than the previous update. That is to be expected, but the next update should have a few more changes. The highest-ranked new addition to the Rivals250 is safety Chris Thompson at No. 48, but he isn’t the only one to debut inside the Rivals100. Offensive lineman Tosh Baker (No. 51), linebacker Noah Sewell (No. 66), quarterback Carson Beck (No. 83), and defensive lineman Vernon Broughton (No. 86) all jumped into the Rivals100.
