Nashville Roadies: Awards from the road
Advertisement
The four-star athlete has more than anecdotal evidence to back up his claim as the fastest player as he spent the large part of late last week helping his school to a state track and field championship. Despite running in four events at the state meet, Groves showed no ill effects as he blew by opposing defensive backs to get open time after time. Groves has shifted his focus to offense full-time and appears to have found his permanent home.
Best Feet
DB T.J. Carter | Hendersonville, Tenn. (2017)
Carter doesn't have the raw athleticism that some of the other prospects in attendance possessed, but he makes up for it with excellent technique. He showed he's capable of battling any receiver toe-to-toe and isn't afraid to back down from a challenge. Carter is excellent at back pedaling quickly and that allows him to keep pace with quicker receivers down the field. Carter has early offers from Tennessee and Kentucky, but will likely have plenty of options down the line.
Best Hands
ATH Jacoby Stevens | Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Oakland (2017)
It was a banner day for Stevens, who has recovered from a turf toe injury that sidelined him at times during the spring. He showed that he's still capable of making highlight plays. He caught pretty much every pass that came his way Sunday and even a few that didn't initially look on target. Stevens can play offense or defense at the next level but no matter which side of the ball he's on, his consistent hands will be a definite asset.
Time Bomb
TE Austin Pope | Knoxville (Tenn.) Christian
This award goes to the player that's about to blow up on the recruiting trail and Pope fits that bill perfectly. He already has a handful of offers, including a recent one courtesy of Nebraska, his first Power Five offer to date. But if Pope performs in camps as he did on Sunday, the Huskers won't be alone for long. The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder has terrific hands, runs great routes and has football speed. He will need to add some weight to handle the rigors of tight end in college, but has the frame to add bulk without losing any speed.
Underclassman Achievement
DE Kenyonte Davis | Columbia (Tenn.) Central (2018)
If there was one unknown underclassman player to pick from Sunday's event as a future national recruit, my money would be on Davis. At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds and just a rising sophomore, Davis has all the physical tools to be a dominant defensive end. He's still learning the finer techniques of being a pass rusher, but once the light bulb comes on, Davis will be terrorizing offensive linemen for years to come.
Best Arm
QB Gavin Schoenwald | Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy (2018)
Schoenwald has made a name for himself this spring with his strong and accurate arm. He already stands at 6-foot-4 and looks like the ideal pro-style passer when it comes to delivery. He stands tall and gets the ball out quickly and on target, something that made him a favorite of the event's wide receivers. Schoenwald is a versatile athlete who excels at several sports, but looks like his future will be as an FBS quarterback.
