LSU Camp: Top defensive performers

Recruiting Wrap: Shelvin is committed to LSU.
Performance: Shelvin burst onto the radar last July and he followed up a strong performance last suummer with another strong performance in 2015. His push-pull, throw offensive linemen in the dirt approach was in full effect Friday, but he also showed a little more to his game. He has expanded his arsenal of moves in the trenches and he showed a very good rip, a swim move, and he brought out the spin move as well. Overall it was a strong performance by one of the best in 2017.

S
Eric Monroe
Houston (Texas) North Shore
Recruiting Wrap: Monroe is committed to LSU.
Performance: The Houston-area safety is known as one of the most well rounded safety prospects in the country, and he did not disappoint Friday. He was strong in coverage. His footwork was quick in one-on-ones, he stayed balanced and he was also strong when he pressed. In 7-on-7 action he showed some nice ballhawking ability as he flew in for an interception. His range was definitely impressive.
4
OLB
Erick Fowler
Manor (Texas)
Recruiting Wrap: Fowler is committed to LSU.
Performance: Fowler may be known more for his work at outside linebacker and defensive end but he spent his day at inside linebacker on Thursday. It did not take long for Fowler to impress. He moved really well in space and he was very physical in coverage. He has some rough edges but his speed allowed him to close on the ball and he was able to get his hands on several passes. Saturday he also worked some defensive end and it is safe to say his speed on the edge was pretty ridiculous.
5
DT
Edwin Alexander
St. Thomas Aquinas
Recruiting Wrap: Alexander is committed to LSU.
Performance: Alexander has added some weight and his strength and explosiveness are also pretty evident. During drills he had no problem swatting bags and turning his hips. In one-on-ones things seemed to really click. His first step gave him a quick advantage over his opponents and he was able to make short work of them with some strong hands.
6
CB
Kristian Fulton
Metairie (La.) Rummel
Recruiting Wrap: Fulton is looking to narrow his list and LSU, Texas, Texas A&M and Florida are a few programs who have drawn a long look.
Performance: Fulton showed a little bit of everything on Friday. He got in the face of receivers and jammed several right off the line. He got right in the hip pocket of guys as they turned to get down the sideline. He undercut short stuff over the middle. He got off balance and too aggressive. He corrected. He got beat and then he turned right back around and went right back to work to show it wouldn't happen twice in a row.

S
Cameron Lewis
Monroe (La.) Wossman
Recruiting Wrap: Lewis is committed to LSU.
Performance: Lewis had a very good few days in Baton Rouge. He is a big safety and he showed some very nice range over the course of the three-day camp. He made some quick reads in 7-on-7 play and jumped a few routes. He also had some nice plays in one-on-one situations, getting strong position on receivers and turning to make a play on the ball.
8
DT
Raekwon Davis
Meridian (Miss.)
Recruiting Wrap: Davis is committed to Alabama.
Performance: Davis' arrival at camp generated quite a bit of buzz. His size made him immediately stick out in a crowd full of big guys and he did not disappoint. He came off the ball low and he was quick with his hands. He was able to maintain his leverage throughout his reps and won the majority of his one-on-ones.
9
SDE
Emmit Gooden
Brownsville (Tenn.) Haywood
Recruiting Wrap: LSU, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Alabama are schools Gooden has standing out right now.
Performance: Gooden arrived Friday afternoon and he made his presence felt very quickly. He has some very nice size and is a well put together prospect. He definitely passes the eyeball test. He showed a few nice moves in Baton Rouge, and finished with two big wins in one-on-ones. His first step allowed him to get off the ball with quickness and he plays with strong leverage.
10
OLB
Travez Moore
Bastrop (La.)
Recruiting Wrap: Moore counts Arizona State, Florida, LSU, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Texas A&M among his offers.
Performance: When Moore arrived on Thursday there was no doubt that he looked the part. He showed Friday morning he had the speed off the edge, too. He gets good separation with his long arms and he was able to dip his shoulder and turn the corner with quickness. He then went out and began working at tight end. It was a very nice athletic display to say the least.
11
DT
Ross Blacklock
Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Elkins
Recruiting Wrap: Blacklock is strongly considering LSU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Missouri and Texas.
Performance: Blacklock definitely looks the part of a serious playmaker on the inside of the defensive line. Watching him run the 40 it was clear he had some athleticism and some explosiveness off the line. During drills he was a tough match-up. He came off the ball quickly and he showed the ability to counter when his first move was stopped.
12
ATH
Daniel Wright (2017)
Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons
Recruiting Wrap: Florida State has a slight lead for Wright at this early point in the process.
Performance: During testing Wright caught the attention of several coaches working the camp and the versatile athlete has continued to stand out on the defensive side of the ball. He has a long wingspan and he used it to his advantage in coverage. During one-on-ones he was able to handle opponent after opponent. His hips and ball skills were hard to miss.
13
WDE
Rahssan Thornton
Killeen (Texas) Shoemaker
Recruiting Wrap: Thornton is committed to LSU.
Performance: Thornton has the capability of playing linebacker and defensive end and he worked at outside linebacker on Thursday and Friday. He used his long wingspan to close down passing lanes and close on his opposition. He is still a bit raw in coverage but his speed, length, and explosiveness allow him to make plenty of plays.
14
SDE
Caleb Roddy
Denham Springs (La.)
Recruiting Wrap: Roddy is committed to LSU.
Performance: The strongside defensive end is strong at the point of attack but he can also dip his shoulder and turn the corner. He is quick off the ball and he is able to engage and shed opponents with ease. During one-on-ones he was able to get inside hand position, separate, and get into the backfield on several reps.
15
ILB
Corione Harris (2018)
New Orleans (La.) Landry-Walker
Recruiting Wrap: Harris received his first offer from LSU after a strong camp performance.
Performance: Harris is a long cornerback who loves to get physical and plays with a lot of intensity. His length allows him to recover well and he is smooth in transition. He broke up a number of passes throughout the course of camp and he was not afraid to lay out to make a play. He took on all competitors and was ready for any challenge.
16
ILB
Layton Garnett
West Monroe (La.)
Recruiting Wrap: TCU, LSU, Tulane, and Louisiana Tech are among the schools that have shown interest in Garnett.
Performance: Garnett spent his time at defensive end after checking in at 6-foot-2.5 and 252 pounds. He is still raw at the position and he does not have all the techniques down, but he came with some intensity. He had a very nice first step and he was strong at the point of attack. He stays low and he strikes quickly.
17
WDE
Michael Lee (2017)
New Orleans (La.) Landry-Walker
Recruiting Wrap: Lee holds scholarship offers from Arizona State, California, Georgia, Miami, Missouri, Texas Tech and Utah.
Performance: Lee is not the biggest but he is a physical presence. He has a stout, strong build and his quick feet allow him to change directions in a hurry. His short space burst is among his top strengths and he has quick strike ability. He is a very smart player and he does a great job of making a read and undercutting routes.
18
WDE
Sci Martin
New Orleans (La.) McDonogh 35
Recruiting Wrap: Utah, Arizona State, LSU, Miami, N.C. State and UNC are among those who have offered Martin.
Performance: Martin has a quick first step and he showed it off Friday morning. He has some nice length on his frame and his quick first step allows him to get an edge on most offensive tackles. He dipped his shoulder and he was able to make his way to the QB on several occasions during one-on-ones.
19
OLB
Malcolm Roach
Baton Rouge (La.) Madison Prep
Recruiting Wrap: Roach holds offers from several schools including Cal, Tennessee, Missouri and Mississippi State.
Performance: Roach is one of the more intriguing guys. He plays standing up but his size has a lot of programs, including LSU, taking a long look at him at defensive end. During one-on-ones on Friday he came out of a two-point stance and his speed was a positive for him. He ended up working up and down the line at a few different spots and performed well.
20
CB
Cheyenne Labruzza (2017)
Albany (La.)
Recruiting Wrap: Labruzza has received interest from LSU.
Performance: Labruzza is a new name for many, but he has been impressive. At 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds he is well put together with room for growth. During one-on-ones he was in the hip pocket of receiver after receiver and he was able to make quick adjustments. His hips and feet allowed him to transition well and he was more than able to hold his own with strong competition.
21
CB
Cameron Dantzler
Hammond (La.) St. Thomas Aquinas
Recruiting Wrap: Dantzler is committed to Mississippi State.
Performance: Over the course of the summer, Dantzler has turned heads with his long, lean frame and his smooth stride. He played both sides of the ball Friday, working at cornerback and wide receiver. At both positions his footwork caught attention and his ball skills were evident as well.
22
ATH
Jonathan Wilson
Port Sulphur (La.) South Plaquemines
Recruiting Wrap: Wilson is committed to Tulane.
Performance: Wilson showed a great combination of size and quickness Saturday morning. He was explosive off the ball and showed some nice counter moves. He was strong at the point of attack and he maintained strong leverage throughout the rep. He also showed the ability to dip his shoulder and get a quick line to the quarterback.
23
ATH
Patrick Queen (2017)
Livonia (La.)
Recruiting Wrap: USF and Tulane have offered Queen.
Performance: Queen has spent most of his time at safety, but he worked at linebacker on Friday and his speed and range allowed him to stand out in both one-on-ones and 7-on-7. He already has some size so the possible move to linebacker has been on the radar for quite awhile. He was able to handle the transition well.
24
SDE
Zachary Carter (2017)
Tampa (Fla.) Hillsborough
Recruiting Wrap: Florida holds the early edge for Carter.
Performance: Carter arrived on Friday and his build caught attention from the start. His 6-foot-4, 240-pound frame has room to add more and his long arms allow him to gain separation from opposing offensive linemen. He had a nice burst off the ball and he had some nice wins in one-on-ones.
25
ILB
Thomas Johnston (2017)
Spanish Fort (Ala.)
Recruiting Wrap: Southern Miss has Johnston's attention and they are pursuing him in football and baseball.
Performance: Johnston worked at inside linebacker on Thursday and he had a solid performance from drills, to one-on-ones, to 7-on-7. He also ran the gauntlet after the first session and showed some impressive hands. In coverage he was physical but he also did a nice job of getting deep in his drops and making a play on the ball.
