It's a Red River battle for five-star OL Devon Campbell

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Texas has been a school tied to five-star offensive lineman Devon Campbell since early in his recruitment.

But the Early Signing Period came and went and the Arlington (Texas) Bowie standout still did not make a commitment, let alone sign anywhere.

The Longhorns are patiently waiting - and still very much recruiting - Campbell, who has also announced Oklahoma in his top two.

“It’s really me not being sure and weighing out my options,” Campbell said on Wednesday night at the opening practice of the Under Armour All-America Game.

“It’s really just taking my time and trying to enjoy the process.”

All the things Campbell has liked about Texas remain in play. It’s close to home. He has been recruited hard by Texas for a long time. The comfort level is there.

But the five-star is just not yet ready to make his pledge.

“Just because it’s close to home and they show love the most,” Campbell said of why the Longhorns are so high on his list.

Oklahoma lingers. The coaching change from Lincoln Riley to Brent Venables really did not alter much in Campbell’s mind especially since offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh is expected to stay on the new staff.

“Nothing really changed with the coaching staff leaving,” Campbell said. “The new staff came to see me so everything is all good.”

Waiting will continue. Numerous prospects will be announcing their commitments Sunday at the Under Armour game but not Campbell.

The five-star will make Texas and Oklahoma wait until Feb. 3 and then the Longhorns and Sooners - and everybody else - will finally have closure.
