Instant Impact: West's best set to make waves in SEC

MORE INSTANT IMPACT: Midwest | Southeast | Mid-Atlantic

National Signing Day is still months away but many top programs have already landed major commitments from top West prospects. Here is a look at five recruits who could have a major impact early in their college careers.

Najee Harris: Alabama

Recruiting overview: Harris has been committed to Alabama for months and his commitment to the Crimson Tide remains firm despite many other programs trying to whisk him away. The biggest competitors could be Pac-12 schools including UCLA, USC and Cal but Ohio State and others want to be involved as well. Harris has shown no serious signs of backing off his Alabama pledge though.

Impact potential: Harris has the size and speed to be a special running back in the SEC from Day 1 and he’s a mix between Derrick Henry and Todd Gurley. The top-rated prospect in the state of California is 6-foot-2 and 222 pounds, has tremendous charisma on the field, surprising speed for a player his size and he has such an outstanding feel for the game he could be a star early on in Tuscaloosa.

Tate Martell: Texas A & M

Recruiting overview: Martell has been committed to Texas A&M for months and has shown no signs he’s backing off. Actually, he’s been recruiting for the Aggies’ 2017 class. Ohio State tried to make a run at him but Martell remains committed to the SEC school.

Impact potential: On the field, there might not be a more dynamic, exciting playmaker than Martell, who is a little undersized but that has not stopped him from being one of the best quarterbacks in this class. Martell has tremendous arm strength and accuracy, he moves so well and throws great on the run. Plus, he’s an absolute leader. In the locker room and on the field, teammates will run through a wall with Martell to win games.

Dylan McCaffrey: Michigan

Recruiting overview: Michigan had been a favorite of McCaffrey’s for some time and he committed in February. There are no indications at all that the four-star is looking at any other programs.

Impact potential: McCaffrey has everything going for him to be an early impact player in Ann Arbor. He has an incredibly strong arm, he can make all the throws, he’s a good decision-maker who looks comfortable under center or in shotgun and Michigan’s quarterback situation isn’t exactly settled. McCaffrey has the family pedigree too with his dad, Ed, and his brother, Christian, who was arguably the best player in college football last year. McCaffrey and coach Jim Harbaugh just seem like a perfect match.

Stephen Carr: USC

Recruiting overview: Carr is a soft commit to USC. He has been committed to the Trojans for months but recently visited Michigan and will look at other programs as his recruitment continues. Ground Zero 7-on-7 teammate Thomas Graham just de-committed from the Trojans on Tuesday.

Impact potential: There are some talented running backs in USC’s stable but Carr is too special to keep on the sidelines for long. He showed to be a half-step quicker than Harris through drills at the Rivals Camp Series Presented by Under Armour in Los Angeles and he’s a dynamic playmaker out of the backfield. The four-star can run between the tackles and make people miss, and he can also catch passes as well as any receiver in California.

Keith Taylor: Washington

Recruiting overview: Taylor is committed to Washington and has been for months. He is not entertaining any other schools and looks to be firmly committed to the Huskies.

Impact potential: Taylor has not received the national exposure like other top-rated cornerbacks in this class because he missed some games due to transfer rules this past season. But he can play. The four-star is a long, rangy, physical corner who sticks with receivers all over the field. Once the ball is in the air, he’s right there to knock it down or pick it off. With his outstanding length and physical play, no one can create much separation. He’s a perfect Chris Petersen recruit because he takes to coaching and is super talented.
