Indiana commit impresses at kicking camp

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. – Indiana commit Mitch Ewald recently took part in the Chris Sailer Top 12 Kicking Camp and put on quite a performance. With some big names in attendance as well as some big legs, the smaller, more consistent Ewald was one of the best all-around kickers there.
"I love this camp," Ewald said over the weekend. "This is by far the most fun camp of the year. It's kind of the best of the best of Chris' guys. For the most part you come out here and you just relax and you have fun. A lot of his camps are real stressful and you're trying to get that ranking. You come out here and you know you're good and you're qualified to be here so you just gotta relax and have fun it is what it is in the end."

Ewald can also relax because he doesn't have to worry about earning that scholarship as a senior. Already offered and already committed to Indiana, Ewald has nothing but excitement for his future in Bloomington, Ind.
"I went to their camp all the way back on June 12th and when I left that camp, I was kind of like, 'wow, if this school offers me, that's where I want to go.' My sister goes to school there so I've been up there many times. I love the campus. I love the coaches and what it boils down to is they have the major I want which is sports marketing. I think I'd be happiest there."
Ewald has the ability to step in early and contribute at IU and it looks as though he will have the opportunity to as well.
"I've talked to the coaches about it and their kicker, Austin Starr is a senior so I'll come in and it will be a prime situation for me," he said. "Competing for the job is one thing but I'm going to have a good chance at getting a spot as a freshman."
Last season, Ewald's longest field goal was 37 yards, though that was also the longest attempt. He has hit a kick as deep as 63 yards in a camp.
"I'd say my range of being comfortable is 37-50 yards," he said. "I'm more of an accurate guy."
