John Houston is one of the top linebackers and the No. 25 prospect in the 2015 class by Rivals.com. He's been a five-star prospect since his class rankings came out.
But the Gardena (Calif.) Serra outside linebacker still feels he has something to prove nationally and he will be granted that opportunity after receiving his Under Armour All-American game jersey during a presentation at his high school on Wednesday.
"I'm looking forward to it," Houston said.
"I want to play against those dudes down South and the guys that I met at the Rivals camp and The Opening. I want to show people I can play with those people down South, in Florida, anywhere. I can compete with anybody, any state, anywhere. I'm just going to go have fun out there basically."
Rivals.com rates Houston as the second-best outside linebacker in the class and the fifth-best prospect in a loaded California class.
He has offers from across the country, but said proving he can compete with anybody from North, South, East or West is driving him through his senior season and into the Under Armour game.
"It is big motivation," Houston said. "It's going to elevate me to do more, more, more during the game, before the game, after the game. I want to show I can play with anybody in the nation and I can compete with the best."
As for his recruitment, Houston is planning to schedule his first official visit to Oregon in a few weeks when the Ducks host Washington.
A trip to Oklahoma should also happen, but the five-star linebacker is uncertain of a date. Florida State was supposed to get a visit, but Houston said the Seminoles have backed off in recent weeks and are not showing as much interest, so he's not sure he'll take a trip to Tallahassee.
UCLA and especially USC are still very much involved in his recruitment. Houston said this past weekend after a close victory over Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame that the Trojans continue to diligently recruit him and have upped their recruiting mail in recent weeks.
It's no secret that many top Serra players end up at USC with Adoree' Jackson, Marqise Lee, George Farmer and Robert Woods leading the way and Houston is definitely another prospect who has a lot of interest in the hometown school.
"They're coming at me hard," Houston said. "They're sending mail. Usually mail as a senior goes down but mine just keeps going up with them. They're showing interest, hitting me up on Twitter and everything like that."
