The dominoes that former five-star quarterback Justin Fields set in motion with his decision to transfer from Georgia continue to fall. On the first day of the Early Signing Period the Bulldogs have made a play for four-star Oak Park, Mich., quarterback Dwan Mathis - and they succeeded. Mathis had previously been committed to Ohio State, one of the possible destinations for Fields.

The news of Mathis’ potential flip emerged late Tuesday evening, not long after Fields’ name appeared on the NCAA Transfer Portal and the two situations appear linked. Ohio State has four-stars Matthew Baldwin and Jack Miller at quarterback in the classes before and after Mathis. Throw Fields into the mix with a redshirt freshman Tate Martell already there, and the depth chart at the position looks crowded.

A four-star prospect who won the Quarterback MVP Award at the Rivals Camp when he was just a sophomore, Mathis revealed his decision to sign with Georgia at his school’s signing day festivities. He has been discussed as a potential early enrollee, but the status of that attempt is undetermined at this stage.

Georgia is the fourth school Mathis has been linked to since the start of his recruitment. When he was still a sophomore, Mathis committed to Iowa State and head coach Matt Campbell. He stepped away from that commitment a few months later, however, and committed to Michigan State early in his junior year. That commitment lasted until this past June, when Mathis flipped to Ohio State.

Mathis maintained his commitment to the Buckeyes through turmoil at the school this summer, the Urban Meyer suspension and Meyer’s eventual retirement announcement. Georgia never extended an offer to Mathis to join its program prior to this week, but has been heavily involved with class of 2020 Oak Park prospects Justin Rogers and Enzo Jennings.

Georgia has a commitment from three-star quarterback John Plumlee already in this 2019 class, but Plumlee is not expected to sign his letter of intent this week and is considering additional opportunities. Fields was the Bulldogs' only signee at the position in the 2018 class, and they do not yet have a quarterback committed in the 2020 class.
