Four-star linebacker Cameron Williams announced his commitment to Indiana on Wednesday, Dec. 19, and subsequently signed a letter of intent. The announcement signaled the culmination of a recruitment that started with a scholarship offer last winter.

“From day one I felt IU, we had a connection because they were my first big school to offer me,” Williams said. “IU, that’s home, the Big Ten and they jumped on me first. Coach (Tom) Allen, in every talk we had he tells me how he can use me. He said I fit into their scheme so well at the husky position.”

Despite his strong initial connection to Indiana, Williams did his due diligence and took the recruiting process out until the very end. An official visit to Bloomington, though, crystalized the decision.

“The bond that I had with the players after that official visit is just unbreakable now,” Williams said. “I can’t go anyplace else, because I had become so close with them in the course of two days. My host, Cam Jones, and (Marcelino Ball), the two huskies, they talked to me about the school. They said how much they love it.

“After that official visit I kind of had a thought of where I was going to end up for the next four years. Academic-wise, they are the best school for my major and they have all the tools for me to make it. I just couldn’t see a downside to IU.”

Williams became the third four-star prospect from the state of Indiana to commit to the Hoosiers in this 2019 class, joining Carmel’s Beau Robbins and Avon’s Sampson James.

“In my eyes, I think we can go nowhere but up,” Williams said. “The development they have ready for us when we get there and the plans that they have for us, everything is on point. IU will be a powerhouse in the coming years. I firmly believe that.

“When you bring all this (talent) together with a plan to get them right, you’ve got the best power-lifting coaches and the best trainers and the best nutritionists, something is going to happen.”

In addition to his abilities on the football field, Williams is also a standout on the track and was a state finalist in the 110-meter hurdles as a junior.
