Oregon’s Willie Taggart will succeed Jimbo Fisher as the head coach at Florida State. And while Taggart, a Florida native and former USF head coach, knows the ins and outs of recruiting the state as well as anyone, time will be of the essence when it comes to the 2018 class. Below are five prospects Taggart should call in the coming days if he hopes to have a chance at landing them at FSU.
Surtain has openly stated that he will give the new Florida State staff a shot to recruit him. He didn’t rule out FSU after Jimbo Fisher walked away, but Taggart and company will need to play catch-up here. At one time, the Seminoles were thought to be running in second place behind LSU when it came to Surtain, so the program has built-in advantages when it comes to his recruitment. Time is of the essence here, but Taggart should be able to get the five-star prospect on an official visit, as he doesn’t intend to make an announcement until signing day in February.
This seems like a slam dunk. Thompson committed to Taggart at Oregon despite his father wanting him to choose Florida State. FSU was the runner-up, and Thompson flirted with the idea of taking an official visit to Tallahassee before the coaching change took place. With Taggart now in place at the in-state school, it stands to reason that Thompson, a Rivasl100 prospect, will rethink his commitment. It’s not often that a recruit’s two finalists merge, but that seems to be what’s taken place here.
James Cook is committed to Georgia and plans to sign with the Bulldogs later this month, but there are other things at play here. It’s possible that Cook is happy with his decision and will proceed as planned, but Taggart shouldn’t overlook the fact that the five-star running back was once a longtime FSU commit and has family ties to the school (his older brother, Dalvin Cook, became a star in Tallahassee). UGA remains the heavy favorite to sign Cook, but there are plenty of reasons the new staff should shoot its shot with the Miami native.
It may not be easy to get the California-based Stephens to attend school on the opposite coast, but he’s Taggart’s highest-ranked commit not named Thomson, and trying to keep him is worth a shot. Stephens did not carry an offer from the old FSU staff, as they didn’t do much recruiting in California, but any program could use a Rivals100 100 safety. Taggart will have to wrestle Stephens away from USC and the new Oregon staff, which won’t be easy, but he likely committed to the Ducks’ staff for a reason.
This might be a long shot, but it’s worth a call. Florida State was one of Fields’ finalists and he came close to committing to the Seminoles before ultimately choosing Georgia. Add in the fact that Taggart has a relationship with the five-star quarterback, and the call seems like an obvious one. Fields talked openly about the idea of visiting Oregon not long ago. And why it may be too little too late, Taggart should make Fields tell him no before moving on to other targets at quarterback. If Taggart can get Fields to pass on the early signing period, that in itself would be considered a massive victory.
