Commitment analysis: Odom to Florida

Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit Tight end Jonathan Odom chose Florida on Friday, putting to end a recruitment that involved a long list of power programs. Below, Rivals.com has a look at how Odom’s commitment to the Gators helps Dan Mullen and how it hurts the coaches that missed out.

HOW IT HELPS FLORIDA

Odom has the look of an FBS-ready prospect. His size is obviously the first thing people note about him but the 6-foot-6 tight end is already a bruising blocker. So while he’s a bit raw from a pass-catching standpoint, his blocking makes him incredibly versatile. There are some that project Odom as a tackle at the college level, and he could well grow into that role. But if he’s able to get quicker and polish his routes, he could also become a difference-making tight end. Most of what Odom becomes at UF will be up to the Florida staff, as compelling arguments for playing him at either position can be made.

On the macro level, Odom’s commitment is a step in the right direction for a Florida program that has had a rough month on the recruiting trail. A solid class is important when it comes to building on the momentum created by last season’s 10-3 finish and landing players like Odom, who carries offers from a number of other major programs, is a nice step in that direction.

HOW IT HURTS THOSE THAT MISSED OUT

The in-state schools in pursuit of Odom will feel a slight sting from this one, as UF finished with the best record of any Power Five school in the Sunshine State a year ago. That’s to say losing recruiting battles to the state’s most stable-seeming program is less than ideal. Losing out on a tight end won’t doom anyone's 2020 class. Then again, there’s a reason the versatile tight end was on the radar of many powerhouse programs.
