Commitment Analysis: Ashton Stamps to LSU

LSU landed its ninth commitment in the 2023 class on Monday as Metarie (La.) Archbishop Rummel defensive back Ashton Stamps made his pledge to Brian Kelly and the Tigers.

Stamps earned an offer from LSU after a standout camp performance in Baton Rouge on June 17 amid an offseason that saw him earn his first Power Five scholarship offers from Missouri and Nebraska. However, the big in-state offer from LSU was enough to get the rising defensive back to lock down his recruitment and commit.

Stamps has the physical profile that has been proven to succeed in the SEC, as his above-average length provides a stiff presence both at corner and safety. However, his talents may be best utilized at the next level further in the defensive backfield from the safety position.

The New Orleans-area safety excels at reading plays before they develop in the backfield, both in the run and pass game. When coming downhill in pursuit of ball-carriers, Stamps has a keen aggressiveness that has created a head hunting persona in his game. However, that comes at the sacrifice of being too aggressive at times and missing on ball carriers. In a conference littered with athletic big bodies, the aggressiveness will certainly pay off at times, but Stamps will need an extra 15-20 pounds to execute open-field tackles effectively.

In the pass game, his range helps him man down large portions of the field with his length helping him execute split-second deep ball situations. While his speed his unverified and largely questionable, his physical profile will more than keep him afloat at the safety position in the SEC.

With a couple of years of both physical and technical development, Stamps could see ample time as either a starter or key rotational defensive back in year three.

At 6-foot-0, 167 pounds, Stamps has not yet been rated by Rivals.
