College Fantasy Football: Five underperforming TEs

GRANT CALCATERRA, OKLAHOMA

There is absolutely nothing to complain about when it comes to Oklahoma’s offense – except that Grant Calcaterra is not getting the ball enough. Owned in 66 percent of leagues, Calcaterra has a measly four catches for 60 yards this season after posting six touchdown grabs a year ago. The Sooners are averaging 55.5 points per game and their receivers are killing it, but Calcaterra has taken a significant step back in the offensive attack.

JAKE FERGUSON, WISCONSIN

Wisconsin’s offense is almost completely centered around running back Jonathan Taylor and that’s working for the Badgers, but it’s not good news for fantasy owners of Jake Ferguson, who has only 10 catches for 101 yards this season with no touchdowns. Taylor, a Heisman contender, has carried the ball 84 times so far with eight TDs and he also leads the Badgers with three receiving scores. Owned in 74 percent of leagues, Ferguson is not putting up big numbers yet.

PAT FREIERMUTH, PENN STATE

Pat Freiermuth is not having a poor season at all as Penn State’s offense is playing really well. But not being in the top 15 of tight ends in fantasy points while being owned in 88 percent of leagues is a little disappointing. The Nittany Lions have a potent running attack and they spread the ball around in the passing game as well. Freiermuth is third on the team with 12 catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns so far.

JACK STOLL, NEBRASKA

Owned in nearly half of all fantasy leagues, Jack Stoll is just staying on the cusp of the top-25 tight ends in fantasy points and that is not a great start for him to the season. Stoll is fourth on the Huskers with 10 catches for 153 yards and a touchdown as Nebraska has spread the ball out to its receivers and even running back Maurice Washington. Nebraska has already played Ohio State already and the schedule lightens up in the coming weeks, but Stoll needs the ball more.

JARED PINKNEY, VANDERBILT

JARED PINKNEY
JARED PINKNEY (USA TODAY)

Entering this season, Jared Pinkney was expected to be one of the top tight ends in college football and in the fantasy game, but he’s been a disappointment so far. Owned in 85 percent of leagues, Pinkney has only 10 receptions for 120 yards and no touchdowns this season; running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn even has more catches. Playing Georgia and LSU has not been easy for Vanderbilt’s offense but finding Pinkney more needs to be a focus for the Commodores.
