Byrd flying low

North Augusta (S.C.) athlete C.J. Byrd was at one point making a serious run for the most updated prospect in the history of recruiting. Over the past couple of months, however, the hoopla surrounding Byrd has somewhat died down and he is nearing trimming his list to five schools.
“I haven’t taken any recent visits or anything like that,” Byrd said. “I was going to visit Florida State at the end of June, but the coaches were on vacation. I think that was a time when everyone was on vacation because I was also going to visit Georgia Tech around that same time.”

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Byrd is rated as a four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 44 prospect nationally overall by Rivals.com. He is also rated as the nation’s No. 4 athlete.
“I haven’t narrowed down my list yet, but I am getting close,” Byrd said. “I am going to narrow down my list sometime in August. We obviously haven’t decided what schools yet, but the number will probably be five.”
As a junior, Byrd was selected all-area and all-conference after racking up 92 tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions on defense to go along with 37 catches for 567 yards and two touchdowns on offense.
“Right now I am not planning to take any more visits this summer,” Byrd said. “I am probably just going to lay low and take it easy these last couple of weeks before school and practice start back.”
He has a 270-pound bench press, a 360-pound squat and does 13 reps on the bench press. Byrd also boasts a 36-inch vertical jump.
Byrd is on track to be a full qualifier with a 3.1 GPA and he has already scored an 890 on the SAT.
