Breaking down Channing Tindall's commitment to Georgia

Just when it seemed like Georgia's record-breaking signing day was over, the Dawgs added yet another late piece to its 2018 recruiting class when Channing Tindall announced his commitment to Georgia on Wednesday night. Tindall had been expected to wait to announce his college selection alter and sign in February but perhaps he got caught up in the momentum and jumped aboard Georgia's No. 1 class. The inside linebacker prospect has been high on Georgia's list for a while and caps off one of the best recruiting days in program history.

WHY IT'S BIG FOR GEORGIA

Georgia has zeroed in on Tindall for quite sometime and his family ties to the area gave them a leg up on the competition. Obviously the Bulldogs' run to the College Football Playoff has helped their momentum on the recruiting trail, but the groundwork with Tindall was laid by the school's staff over the summer. With several key players, including star linebacker Roquan Smith, likely headed to the NFL Draft, Tindall could have a chance to step in and compete for playing time early in his career. Stealing Tindall away from a pair of SEC rivals, Auburn and South Carolina, makes his addition only that much sweeter.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE PROGRAMS THAT MISSED OUT

The one hurts quite a bit for South Carolina as the Bulldogs came right into their backyard and nabbed one of the state's best players. A player with Tindall's skillset would have had the same opportunities to play early in his career and likely would have thrived in Will Muschamp's defense. Since Muschamp's arrival the Gamecocks have done a great job keeping talent close to home and the team's success will likely help that in the future but it wasn't enough to beat out the Dawgs for Tindall.

Auburn had a unique connection to Tindall, with Tigers linebackers coach Travis Williams having played and coached at Spring Valley High School. The Tigers were one of his first major offers and worked the relationship well, seemingly having the lead at various points throughout his recruitment. But the longer things went along the more the Tigers found themselves in a war with the Bulldogs and it was one they ultimately ended up losing.
