AP Top 25 Poll: A closer look at starting QBs for top teams

In light of five-star quarterback Justin Fields' commitment to Georgia this week, here is a closer look at the starting quarterbacks for each team in the top 10 of the AP Top 25 Poll.

MORE: Three breakout stars from Week 6

1. ALABAMA

Recruitment summary: Hurts committed to Alabama in June prior to his senior season and never looked back. Texas was his first love, but an offer didn't materialize. Texas A&M, Mississippi State and Florida were three other schools that stood out to him before his commitment to the Crimson Tide.

In college: Blake Barnett and Cooper Bateman were ahead of Hurts on the depth chart when he arrived in Tuscaloosa, but that quickly changed. His impressive performances early in his career surprised many, and he secured the starting spot after leading the Crimson Tide to big wins early in the 2016 season. Hurts improved with each game he played and ended the season by leading Alabama to the National Championship game, accounting for more than 3,500 total yards and more than 35 touchdowns as a freshman. So far this season he has led Alabama to an undefeated record while completing a higher percentage of his passes and accounting for almost 15 touchdowns. Hurts has done all of this with freshman phenom Tua Tagovailoa breathing down his neck.

2. CLEMSON

Kelly Bryant

Recruitment summary: Bryant wasn't a highly-coveted prospect but did hold offers from schools like Florida, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Virginia Tech. He named a top five of Clemson, N.C. State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Florida after a visit to Gainesville in early April. The Gators looked like the favorite after that visit, but the Tigers won out in the end.

In college: Some guy named Deshaun Watson was in the recruiting class before Bryant, so he knew he would have to probably wait his turn. Watson, a former five-star, went on to be a Heisman Trophy finalist, led Clemson to last season's National Championship and is now a rookie in the NFL starting for the Houston Texans. But now it's Bryant's turn at Clemson, and he is certainly making the most of his opportunity. Much like the past two seasons, people view the Tigers as the biggest threat to Alabama, and Bryant's quarterback play has a lot to do with it. The first-year starter is completing 67 percent of his passes and has accounted for 11 touchdowns this season. As long Bryant's quality play continues, Clemson and that stellar defense should be playing into the new year.

3. PENN STATE

Trace McSorley

Recruitment summary: In high school McSorley was extremely successful but never stood out when schools looked at his measureables. Even so, schools like North Carolina, Virginia Tech, N.C. State and Vanderbilt saw his potential and extended offers. McSorley committed to Vanderbilt while James Franklin was the head coach of the Commodores but flipped to Penn State shortly after Franklin replaced Bill O'Brien as the Penn State head coach.

In college: It's certainly fair to say McSorley has played far better than his high school rating. His size wasn't ideal, but he is a winner and makes big plays when things break down around him. McSorley's completion percentage has improved significantly compared to last season, and his win-loss record is one of the best for current college starting quarterbacks.

4. GEORGIA

Jake Fromm

Recruitment summary: Fromm committed to Alabama in late 2015, but Kirby Smart was named as the new head coach at Georgia shortly thereafter. One of the first offers Smart's new staff handed out was to Fromm even though the Bulldogs held a verbal commitment from eventual Florida State signee Bailey Hockman. It didn't take long for Fromm to change his mind and he announced his commitment to Georgia in March of 2016.

In college: The quarterback situation at Georgia has kept Dawg fans on their toes all season. Former five-star Jacob Eason came into this season as the starter but only threw three passes in the first game of the year before getting hurt. Since then it has been Fromm that has guided Georgia to an undefeated record. With the eventual addition of newly committed five-star Justin Fields to the depth chart, the Georgia quarterback situation will be one of the biggest storylines of the rest of this season and the upcoming offseason.

5. WASHINGTON

Jake Browning
Jake Browning (AP Images)

Recruitment summary: A lot of schools got a chance to host Browning before he committed in March of his Junior year. Alabama, California, Colorado, Oklahoma State, Boise State, and Utah were some of Browning's finalists but Washington landed the prolific high school quarterback.

In college: Browning had a good start to his college career throwing for almost 3,000 yards and completing 63-percent of his passes as a freshman but he really stepped it up as a sophomore. He guided the Huskies to five more wins and the College Football Playoff while throwing 43 touchdowns and decreasing his interception total from the previous season. A lot is expected of Browning this season but so far he has the Huskies undefeated, is completing passes at a much higher rate, and has a better touchdown to interception ratio than his previous two seasons as a starter.

6. TCU

Kenny Hill

Recruitment summary: Texas A&M landed Hill's commitment after their spring game in 2012. Baylor, Texas Tech, and TCU were also in the picture for Hill prior to his commitment. Hill was named the Aggies starting quarterback before his sophomore year after Johnny Manziel left for the NFL. Everything didn't go as planned in College Station as Hill and a few of other talented quarterbacks ended up transferring. Texas A&M granted Hill a release in early 2015 and a few months later he announced his transfer to TCU.

In college: In his first season as a starter at TCU Hill completed more than 60-percent of his passes but threw almost as many interceptions as he did touchdowns. The Horned Frogs finished the season with a losing record but this year seems very different. The Horned Frogs are undefeated and Hill is playing at a very high level, completing almost 70-percent of his passes and isn’t far off from matching his total passing touchdowns from last season.

7. WISCONSIN

Alex Hornibrook

Recruitment summary: In June before his senior year Hornibrook committed to Pittsburgh to play in Paul Chryst's system. At the end of the 2014 season Wisconsin head coach Gary Anderson took the head coaching job at Oregon State and Chryst was named head coach of the Badgers. Chryst is a former Badgers quarterback and was their offensive coordinator in the early 2000s. Hornibrook took an official visit to Wisconsin in January before Signing Day and officially flipped his commitment shortly thereafter.

In college: Hornibrook has had some time to develop in the Wisconsin system but he was thrown into the fire last season as a sophomore and started nine games helping the Badgers to an 11-win season. The running game is king at Wisconsin but Hornibrook is playing some solid football and keeping the Badgers on track. He's already thrown more touchdowns than he did all of last season and should blow past his passing yards total from last season with ease this year. Much of Wisconsin's hopes this year hinge on what Hornibrook and add to their devastating running game.

8. WASHINGTON STATE

Luke Falk
Luke Falk (AP Images)

Recruitment summary: Only Cornell and Idaho offered Falk when he was in high school. He began his high school career in Utah but transferred to Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian for his junior year. He finished up his high school career back in Utah. Falk had verbally committed to Cornell as a high school senior but he took Mike Leach up on his offer to walk on at Washington State instead.

In college: Falk has been one of the most prolific passers in college football for the past two seasons and he is on track for an even better season this year. You have to give credit to Leach and the way Falk worked at developing his craft. He has Washington State undefeated after passing two of their biggest tests of the season in USC and Oregon but Falk has a chance to really take the Cougars into uncharted territory. If Washington State can get passed Stanford and Utah in the first two weeks of November, the Apple Cup game at Washington could make or break their chances at with the College Football Playoff.

9. OHIO STATE

J.T. Barrett

Recruitment summary: LSU, Baylor and Texas Tech were just some of the other contenders for Barrett. He committed to the Buckeyes in April of 2012, about a month after he took an official visit to Columbus. Barrett never wavered on his commitment despite a few teams trying to get into the picture.

In college: Barrett and the Buckeye faithful have such a unique relationship. The only three-time team captain in Ohio State's rich history holds numerous Big Ten and Ohio State records and should be earning more of them by the end of this season. Sporting one of the best win-loss records in school history (and potentially the best in Ohio State history by the end of this season), Barrett has been under fire this season for his abilities as a passer. Even with the loss to Oklahoma earlier this year, Ohio State isn't out of the College Football Playoff picture yet. Major games against Penn State and Michigan could help their case down the road.

10. AUBURN

Recruitment summary: An early Texas Tech commitment, Stidham flipped to Baylor in late 2014. He had an impressive freshman season after taking over for Seth Russell but decided to leave Baylor after news of the sexual assault scandal broke. Stidham transferred to Baylor after spending a year in junior college.

In college: After everything at Baylor was exposed, Stidham has landed on his feet at Auburn and is doing very well. He has only thrown two interceptions on the season and is completing more than 70-percent of his passes. A tough game at Clemson back in September resulted in Auburn’s only blemish so far this season. With few “easy” games left on the schedule Stidham will really be tested with games at LSU and Texas A&M and homes games against Georgia and Alabama later this year.
