The Latest: Even though he’s just a rising sophomore, Class of 2020 athlete Avantae Williams has already made a verbal commitment to Miami. But with nearly three years until he signs with the Canes, it’s not surprising to see other schools still in pursuit. One of the programs working to pry Williams away from Miami is Alabama. Rivals.com caught up with Williams at the recent Orlando stop of the Rivals 3-Stripe Camp series presented by adidas to talk about the Tide and the Canes.
In His Words: “Of course Miami is the school that talks to me the most but Alabama has been talking to me a lot and so has UCLA.”
On Alabama: “It was a huge offer. It opened my eyes up. I really like the coaches and the way they talk to me. They don’t talk to me like any regular coach, they don’t treat you like a kid. It just shows me that I need to step it up a little bit and it’s more business than just having fun. I was supposed to go up there this break but I didn’t get the opportunity to go so I have to wait. Maybe over the summer I’ll go up and camp. Coach Pruitt and Coach Ansley are the coaches recruiting me and we talk a lot”
On comparing Miami and Alabama: “They’re good at putting guys in the league. They’re not Miami, though, they’re good.”
On Miami: “Miami, that’s me. I committed earlier this year. I’m going there with my cousin Lorenzo Lingard. Florida boys, every school wants a Florida boy so if we just all go to Miami we can take over.”
Rivals Reaction: Williams has strong ties to Miami but with three years until he officially becomes a Cane it’s not surprising to see other schools join the mix. Expect him to take visits and enjoy the process but it will be tough to pry him away from The U.
